This is probably too late, but my recommendation would be to take the train to Suzhou and back, and getting the taxi there.

Driving takes something like 90 minutes; the train is 45 min. Don't know train ticket charge, but it's not much and then a local taxi would be pretty cheap.

I've experienced a lot of traffic on the roads between the two cities, and would feel more confident with the train schedule if I had to catch a flight out of PVG. You may need some help with translating, but you should be able to get a subway from the train station to PVG incorporating the hi-speed maglev train.

Let us know what happens!

We found the air conditioned bus cleaner and more comfortable than the train. From the Shanghai south bus station to Suzhou was about 50 rmb per person.

Shnghainese, a couple of years ago we caught the bus from the Shanghai North station to Hangzhou and were happy with the price and service. One thing we did notice, though, which could throw a foreigner, was that the destination signs at the departure gates had no pinyin (Roman alphabet) translation. We solved the problem by identifying the characters Hang Zhou on our tickets (which did have the mathcing pinyin) and matching them to the departure signs, but I'm wondering if this is also the situation at the South bus station (and is still the same at the North station, for that matter).

Neil: Oohoo for Aussie ingenuity! I didn't think about it since I read the signs in chinese and don't even bother with the pinyin. Anyone else can help, please?
