Singapore chinese new year

Does Singapore celebrate Chinese New Year on the same day(s) as the rest of Asia ? I believe this holiday falls next year on Feb 7, 2008. How many days does the celebration take ? Will I have problems getting inexpensive accommodation during that time ?

Yes, it's the same day in SIngapore as elsewhere. I don't know about lodging during that time, but many small shops will be closed for about a week. The big malls, etc will be open.

You'll have trouble getting lodging at just about any time. Singapore seems to be experiencing a hotel shortage, as hard as that is to believe. You'll need to book now to get a place, and even then you may have to hunt around.

Some restaurants close on the day but are open the rest of the time.

I had the same problem last month though. I ended up in a backpackers hostel. The rates were crazy at that time...about US$180+ in a 4 star hotel.

There are a couple around in Singapore. There is Betelbox www.betelbox.com, and sleepy sams, the Hive. The one i stayed at was City Backpackers www.citybackpackers.com.sg

Expect basic amenities and sharing of room but it was cheap, i paid $17 / night for my stay there.

Hotel rates are expected to increase.

1st & 2nd day of Chinese New Year is publice holiday in Singapore. During this 2 day it is not easy to find a place to fill ur stomach, most of the shops & restaurants are close except fast-food eg. McDonalds, KFC still open but will be very crowded. So be repared.

Forgot to add must check out the 'lo hei' which is available only during the Chinese New Year period. It's a salad with raw fish. Supposed to bring prosperity to those who eat it.
