Blue Elephant has a/c - morning class includes a trip to a local market. Really great location right at the Surasak sky-train stop. Highly recommended.

Recently visited Bangkok and attended a rather new cooking school: Bangkok Thai Cooking Academy. Had a good time, met a lot of people, and ate some great meals. Of course, we visited the market first, then back to the air conditioned Thai home for preparation, cooking, and eating. Instructor was lots of fun, laughed alot, and the class went by soooo fast. Recommend highly.

i did not report back here for some reason but we did do a unique cooking class while in bkk in november...
we took a 1/2 day class on a manorha boat (converted rice barge) offered by the marriott resort and spa...
you start the morning by boarding the boat at the marriott at 8AM. a light breakfast is offered. you cruise up the river to taskin pier where you disembark and walk to the market located near to the shangri-la and centre point hotels. you tour the market with the chef and an assistant. you re-embark on the boat and start sailing up the river. you have a 15 minute break to cool down, drink a lovely drink and then the class begins.
there were the 4 of us plus one lovely lady from the mid-west usa.
the chef talks about the ingrediants and their use...about spices, chillis, etc.
you then begin to cook. some chop, some stir, some do other parts and some watch... then you switch off.... there is only one gas burner, but for a small class this is fine.... most of the prep work has been done and the seafood and meats have been cleaned and kept in the fridge.
all this time you are floating by the wonders along the river: the oriental, the penn, river city, ROS, the hospital where the king now is living, wat arun, the grand palace, etc. at one point we had to stop because the river flooding has caused the space under one bridge to be too small for our craft. actually the cooking is about done...
about this time we turn around and the cooking is finished.
we take seats near to the bow at a large table and begin to pass our dishes around in a family share style... the staff has plated the dishes beautifully. there is tons of food.
we spend the next hour plus cruising down the river past all of these wonderful sights eating the most delicious foods. we had cooked 4 main dishes. the chef finsihed the meal by cooking in demonstration form a sweet dessert dish which was served to us...
there were the 5 of us plus a staff of perhaps 8 on the boat.
IT WAS ONE OF OUR BEST EXPERIENCES EVER IN THAILAND.... right up there with the "secret place" which tong took us to a few years ago...
cost: 2800 B per person including everything, and recipes and a beautiful black apron.
not cheap, but well worth it and a truly unique experience... call the hotel or email them for reservations, min 4 persons
