Rajasthan Car Hire

Hi all,

We're hammering out the details of next spring's trip to India and I was hoping you might be able to help.

For the most part, we're planning on taking trains between destinations, but there may be some cases in which we'll want to hire a car and driver, such as between Jaisalmer and Jodhpur or Jodhpur to Udaipur. I'm trying to get an idea of 1) what these sorts of intercity trips cost; and 2) any recommended companies.

I've seen lots of recommendations on these boards for cars and drivers for entire tours, but nothing on a more ad hoc basis. Does anyone have any information they could share? Thanks very much!!

One thing you could do is contact the hotel you are departing from for a quote. Are you using an agency for hotel and train reservations? If so, they could also arrange a driver.

Rajasthan 4-wheel drive is a good company. You'll find references to it on this site. I used them 18 months ago to travel from Agra to Jaipur. The Oberoi quoted me $350.

Rajasthan 4-wheel drive did it for $90 - and the car was almost new, had air conditioning and seat belts. Even had a first aid kit and bottled water. And the driver wore a uniform.

You might inquire with Compass Travel's head office in Delhi. After positive postings about Compass from Craig and others, we decided to use them to arrange cars/drivers on our Rajasthan trip a couple of years ago (we had arranged all of our own hotels, etc...). The cars they arranged were all in perfect condition and the drivers were safe and lovely.
