Namaste all! Thanx Bob and others, glad ur have found the shopping advice helpful, fun and informative. More to come!

Bob, in response to your question, yes, I wld be delighted/ and am certainly open to helping out any fodorite planning/arranging their trip! Actually, would love too! As many of u know, I am a American woman who has been in/ out of India for over 15 years and have been leading/managing cultural tour programs in the region for over a decade. So yes, have endless connections and know~how to help anyone!

ACtually, i have been thinking to start my own little travel something someday called "Dreams of India," which would indeed help folks put together their DReam Trips to the region. Right now i and quite busy with various India~related projects, but someday. However, i do certainly have time to help the occasional India bound Fodorite plan their trip. So yes, u can always contact me at [email protected]

On another note, i am open to any Fodorite contacting me while passing thru Delhi. Wld be fun and happy to meet up/and show u around all my favorite shopping and eating haunts, away from the tourist sites, shopping and eating till we drop. *Note, I am often on the road, but feel free to drop me a line to see if the timing works.

Now back to shopping info...What i wrote about shopping is really just the tip of the Indian shopping iceburg. Shopping is really a huge part of traveling in India and as u explore the country u will also be exploring the arts and the crafts, perhaps even meeting the artisans themselves, visting local markets, and finding wonderful treasures. Actually, shopping in India is something of art form in itself (haggling and bargaining and all that goes on in~between!) and from the moment u wake to the moment u sleep, U can shop till u drop. And really even more than that, as in India the shopkeepers will even make house/hotel calls, deliver goods that have been custom~made and shops will stay open all hours of the nites if there is interest and above all, almost anything can u want or for that matter did not know u wanted can magically be found at, someone's "cousins brothers" or "unlces" shop!

As this thread was about Delhi shopping, I just want to say that each and every place u visit in India has different shopping specialties, local crafts of the region, so u will always see new things every step of the way as u travel in this amazing and very colorful country.

Delhi, being the big city has a good collection of crafts from all over India, and a huge collection of kashmir items as i had mentioned earlier. And of course, endless endless markets! Oh, there is also a great spice market for those interested, u might try that out too..

If u are traveling thru North India, u will be introduced to different local crafts as u move from one region to the next. For example, Varanasi is most famous for its silk brocade, ~(saris/wall~hangings/bed~speads,etc)), in AGRA, marble inlay work with precious and semi precious stones~, in JAIPUR, many things such as gems and jewels, rugs, blue pottery, textiles, puppets, etc,,,

And a few more places, UDAIPUR is wonderful for minature paintings, and there is KHAJURAHO for carvings and actually has some very good jewels at good prices as diamond mines are very close by..The list is endless and happy to give more specific north indian shop reccos for those on the big route.

And Bob, speaking of travel suggestions, i wld certainly suggest that u extend your trip to see more of India outside the golden traingle, especially as u are such a shopper deluxe. I have an idea, perhaps u can cut from your 18 plus days lounging and lazing poolside at the Marriot Resort Bangkok and add some more good old travel time in India. Of course there is always ur next trip, and it is so so easy to fly to Delhi or Mumbai once u are living in Bangkok.

Nmaste and happy/safe travels. See u shopping in India!

leave the marriott in bkk for even one minute...never...i think 18 days there is just barely enough...

as i have said elsewhere, we are looking at our india trip as an introduction and exploration....we want to see if we like it, and if we do we certainly would be back another time....the jury is out as they say at least until november...

i have revisited my book, the treasurers and pleasurers of india again, and find that there is a ton of info in there...ron krannich does a great job with his books...bonita why don't you write a rival book and include the local market sites in yours??

Hi Bob..
i AM sure you know i was only joking about extending ur India trip and cutting from the MARRIOT Spa! i know u love the place and i too AM a big beleiver in lounging and enjoying a good thing.. i myself am prone too long and very lesisurely trips to BKK...

Exactly..I see your thinking abt the India trip...If u like the destination, and then u can come back..

And India will surely make itself known to u..Folks either love it or well, do not!..And if u love it, u will have to come back! I fell in Love with the destination over 15 years ago and the rest is my history..

About the writing a guidebook suggestion for India, it is a good idea, and it is in my list of things i am thinking/entertaining to do for many years. Many have suggested. I might just be moved to do it this year too.Wish me luck...Will u will buy a copy if i put ur name in the dedication...namaste..bonita..

Bob!!! Not that much is written! I would say the book is still in the Dream~Format stage as I am a bit busy with other projects and getting more so!

But alot of the research has been done and i will continue with the research this season in India. I will be in the region October~May..

So, sorry, *YOU will have to wait a few more years or at this rate maybe even a few lifetimes for your complimentary copies of the book! Perhaps i can send u installments!!!

I note that you mention Cottage Industries. There are many that put that name on their shops, but the real thing is the Central Cottage Industries Emporium on Janpath. A large building with just about everything at state-controlled priced. Cards and home-shipping accepted.

Bonita, I am going to Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangaolore and Mumbai for business (2nd trip this year so far. I have the most freee time in Delhi and would like to have some clothes made. Can you reccommend a ladies Tailor. I am staying in the Taj Mansingh road for 5 days for work. I just hit the shopping surface last time we were there and find the fabrics lovely and more affordable for clothing in India as opposed to pricey Ireland.

You can visit Hauz Khas village which is a great place to shop in New Delhi. Other shopping areas of your concern may be Dilli Haat near INA metro station, Karol Bagh, Connought Place, Chandni Chowk and South Extension. All of them are easily reachable through Delhi metro.
