Marriott, KL-Singapore

Hi,

We are two of us travelling to Malaysia/ Singapore in August. Two questions.

1. I was checking out the hotels in KL and have identified JW Marriott as suiting our needs. Just wanted to check your views on the hotel.

2. We are planning to take the train from KL to Singapore. I wanted to know if it is a comfortable, hassle free option or is road a better option?

Thanks for your suggestions.

We stayed in the JW Marriott in KL last year (January). The rooms, breakfast buffet, staff, and location were all great.

We took the train from Singapore to KL. The ride was comfortable enough but the car was a bit dusty/musty. The dining car left a lot to be desired. Take something to eat. We thought the ride was interesting and would do it again.

How long was the ride and around how much it could cost!

Thanks,

Diana

DianaS: We took the 1st-class train which left Singapore about 8 am and arrived in KL in the late afternoon. The cost was about $25US. Look at seat61.com for the latest schedules and prices.

Could try the Westin Hotel right beside the Marriott. It is much newer, and location is the same.

Just got back from a weekend in KL, stayed at the Marriott. It is a nice hotel with a nice location, but the service is so crappy and I was so disappointed that I would not recommend this hotel to anybody. You pay a five star rate and have five star expectations, but....

Just a few examples... we called housekeeping twice for an iron. We had a wedding to go to, and I first called about an hour and half before we had to leave. My expectation for a five star hotel would be that it would arrive no later than twenty minutes after my call. A half an hour later my husband called again, told them we were now in a bit of a hurry. The iron never showed up; we went to the wedding in wrinkled clothes.

Front desk staff are useless. Let people jump queue and don't even try to see people in the order they arrived. Then no apology, much less a smile.

Breakfast is a joke. You get a little checklist to choose what you want... though usually they get the order wrong and it is cold by the time it arrives. I asked for ketchup and it took ten minutes. Coffee refill, forget it.

I had a coffee in the cafe one afternoon and the waiter stood nearby, picking his nose.

To add insult to injury, you have to pay for parking.

I know these are little things, but there were so many...! Other wedding guests stayed there, too, and had other complaints... every one of them said they would never stay there again.

We haven't tried the Westin next door but it does look nice. We've stayed at the Mutiara, which is also nice, and the Ritz, which was okay, but I stand by the Mandarin Oriental as the best hotel we've stayed at in KL (they also have a superb breakfast). The Shangri-La also comes very highly recommended and we'll give it a shot the next time we're in the city.

Really, don't stay at the Marriot. You will find similar reviews from other travellers at asiahotels.com... it is just not a great hotel. KL has some lovely hotels, and for five stars you'll get some of the cheapest rates in the world, so go for the best!!

Oh, and I'd take the train. Haven't done it myself but a friend did and she said it was cheap, low stress... driving into Singapore is a big pain in the arse (have done this). It's supposed to be a pretty ride on the train, too.
