Planning a solo trip to Myanmar and would prefer to travel it independently rather than with a tour if I can. In terms of safety, what should I consider and how 'easy' will it be for me to travel around.

You can DIY in Myanmar with flights/hotel now bookable on line but you may prefer to use a local Agent so you have a contact in case of schedule changes etc.

Myanmar is a very safe country for travelers. I would recommend that you use a local agent to book hotels, flights, any car and driver, etc you might want, as they can often get better prices. Also, as SS says, they will keep track of any flight changes, etc and call you )or your lodgings) and keep you up to date. We used Santa Maria for both of our trips, but there are many excellent agents in Yangon.

While things are changing rapidly in Myanmar, is has a much less developed tourism infrastructure than other countries in SE Asia.

I agree with both of the above, did the trip DIY with a bit of help with domestic flights and a boat reservation from my guest house in Yangon. I found I was able to do much of the work by email and that was 2 years ago now so I'm sure it's all improved in that regard. I suggest you give it a whirl on your own and if you run into complications, get in touch with an agent or one of your accommodations for help with individual items.

Keep in mind that many of the hotels and guest houses listed in the guides may be booked up. I found a good way to find others was to ask the local ones you first contact for recommendations for others, as there are loads of new ones not in the books. Hotel booking websites, like hotels.com and booking.com have a surprising number of possibilities, to book either through the booking sites or to use for names of places to find their own websites, if they have their own.

Did I say it way easy? Not necessarily, but doable. Sometimes you have to be far more persistent than when making arrangements elsewhere. Keep plugging away and you'll get it done. That's my point.
