Cyberia,

I am surprised about Chile. I have never felt as safe as I did in Santiago at night.

Valparaiso also felt safe, but I was there during the day with a group.

Montego Bay, Jamaica. Got lost while driving...pretty damned scary. Then some guy was checking out the wife through the bathroom window and actually propositioned her "Hey pretty lady.." We got our money back and stayed at the cliffs!

Riding a speeding bus in Mexico in the rain passing other buses uphill on curves. I was positve we were going to either hit an oncoming vehicle or fly off the cliff.

We were in South Africa to interpret a conference, that turned out to be nothing like we expected at all. When we arrive at the "compound" we were met a by two guards with machine guns who took our passports then let us thru the barbed wire fence and to our room/hut. I kept looking around to see if I saw someone who looked like jim jones passing out kool aid! We did get some cool pictures of the place if anyone is interested

In Bangkok we have never felt scared. I did feel really weird when a ladyboy grabbed my crotch as we walked around patpong!

My cousin is an engineer and works two weeks here in KC then two weeks in Mexico. A few montha ago as they were driving across the border, their driver started on a different route. My cousin didn't say anything but on their way back, he took the same long route. Only when there were back across the border did the driver tell them that they were right in the middle of the drug cartel wars and they had to drive around to avoid the hot spots! He still has to go down there every other week and its getting worse!

My wife and I have really weird jobs that take us to some weird/scary pleaces here in Kansas City. We often have to go to the state psychiatric hospital at 2am, that has nothing at all to do with travel, but we have seen some things that made me scream/laugh/cry/ and want to run home!

the only place i've ever felt unsafe was in la paz, bolivia. don't walk alone at night and don't stray too far from your hotel. there's a reason your hotel recommends restaurants that are within 2 blocks. also while shopping at the market (during the day), a ruckus was going on while we were inside a store. it seems as tho a tourist was mugged on the street. there was a rug i wanted but didn't feel safe going to an atm...

Passing through a rural checkpoint in Bosnia at night in the late 90s. Even though the war was well over and tourism returning, it was pretty hard not to think about it when the tough guys with the machine guns were shining their flashlights in my eyes and checking out my wife. But they waved us past and in a few hours we were partying in fabulous Dubrovnik.

The other time was having a gun stuck in my face in Washington DC, about 3 blocks from the Capitol.
