Golden Triangle Kuala Lumpur

We are planning on visiting Kuala Lumpur in August and staying at the Mandarin Oriental. Would it be an easy walk from the KLCC area to other areas of the Golden Triangle (KL tower/ Sultan Ismail and Bukit Bintang)? Would it be better to stay in the Bukit Bintang area? Would it be safe to walk around at night? Thanks for your help.

I have walked from the Petronas towers to the main Bukit Bintang area, but it is quite a hike. The easier thing to do is walk down Jl Ampang to Sultan Ismail and take the monorail up to Bukit Bintang.

I would suggest taking a taxi to the KL Tower. It's quite close on the map to the monorail station, but you have to hike way up the hill to get to the base of the tower.

That whole area is generally quite safe to walk around in.

Walk from KLCC area to:

a)Bukit Bintang - 15-20mins; or you can walk to Bukit Nanas monorail station next to Concorde Hotel/Hard Rock Cafe (10 mins), then catch a monorail to Bukit Bintang monorail station (either 2 or 3 stops).
b)Sultan Ismail - 5-10 mins
c)KL Tower - opposite direction to the walk towards Bukit Bintang; probably takes 1/2hr or more as it involves walking up a pretty steep hill. More advisable to catch a taxi.

IMHO, it's better to stay in the Bukit Bintang area (5-star hotels include Westin, JW Mariott, Millenium)...more food & shopping choices. Safe to walk around at night, just stay with the crowd. Bukit Bintang area is buzzing every night.

But Mandarin Oriental is a great place to stay, close to KLCC, and close to pubs/bars around Sultan Ismail area.

Any further questions, email me at [email protected] to help.

For the record, there's a free shuttle service at the KL tower that will ferry you to and from the base of the tower. Just wait/enquire at the booth by the road level entrance.

We loved the Mandarin Oriental in KL - Club Floor room had an in-your-face view of the Petronis Towers and it couldn't be more convenient to the KLCC.

Otherwise we found KL very pedestrian unfriendly - a lack of sidewalks, crosswalks, etc. We ended up taking taxis from the Mandrian more often than not.

We rode the monorail from end to end to see the city and we took the LRT to chinatown, but I remember it being a bit of a walk to get to both stations.

Felt completely safe walking about though.
