There are places in Bali that will arrange a day trip, but I don't recommend it. At least spend one night near Borobudor. There is lots to see in the area.
You cannot book flights between Denpasar and Yogja outside of Indonesia, you'll need to wait until you are there.

Actually, you can book domestic flights from outside Indonesia, you just don't want to, since Garuda charges about 10 times the rate they do for flights booked inside Indonesia.
As other posters mentioned, the area around Borobudur needs 2 to 3 days at least. The lesser known Prabanan temples are just as impressive as Borobudur.

MichaelBkk, How can we find out about flight times? The Garuda website only shows one flight at about 1:00 p.m. from Denpasar to Yogya, and the same for return. It really wastes the day. We had heard there were very frequent flights so were surprised to find only one. We were planning on flying to Yogya for two nights, and had hoped to find an a.m flight to Yogya and a late afternoon return. I'm a planner and don't like the idea of waiting until we get to Bali to at least check out the schedule. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

CFW, I had tried to plan a return trip to Borobudor (flyng Silk Air to Solo) continuing on to Lombok. I could find a flight by looking on travelocity, but the price was very high (as Michael says). I contacted a travel agent in SIngapore, but he was unable to book the Garuda flight for me, and said that all he could suggest was to book it when I got to Indonesia. Eventually, the complications of the itinerary got to be too much and I decided to go elsewhere.

Garuda may have only one direct flight between the two, but there are about a dozen domestic air carriers in Indonesia, so there are probably other options.
You might check out Bali Discovery tours (http://www.balidiscovery.com), one of the larger Bali-based tour operators. They have a 3 day/2 night package to central Java, and can probably arrange air tickets as well.
