It is expensive for thai standards though...if u want to find local fare, go to the chinatown, where you will find great seafood and hawker fare. i recommend u walk around before settling for any stall...you'll know what is best by the number of customers they have waiting!!

having heard horror stories of tummy upsets in Bangkok I'm a little reluctant to try hawker fare. I would love to and have done so in Malaysia. Has anyone got any specific recommendations? Is it safe to assume that if it is busy with locals it will be ok or are they less likely to suffer anyway?

Went to the C&C restaurant in Chiang Mai - it was great, a mixture of richer Thais and Westerners. The one in Sukhimvit is meant to be cooler though - condoms under glass tables from what I've heard. The hawker food is okay to eat in some places - look at the hygine factor around. Sometimes they locals have stronger stomaches than us. Also, apparently the fruit is not safe because TB could be on the knife. I ate it for the entire month I was there though, and I survived.

Donna -
Like you say - if the place has lots of people eating there - the guy cooking doesnt look like he's dying of anything nasty then go for it. If not, you'll miss the best food. I spent 2 months eating almost entirely from hawker stalls in thailand, where else can you eat such fantastic food for about a pound! If you're really worried, then stick to vegetables and avoid meat.
Enjoy!!
