Based on my investigation last year Koh Tao was less expensive for accommodations that are nice A/C rooms but not deluxe on a nicely landscaped property. Plus you are just where the diving and snorkeling is very good. We stayed on Samui and thought it over-rated but foound Koh Tao (toured for 3 hours) having nice places-not back-packing by any means but not Sala Samui or Evason. But for being in the wter nice but not luxury is fine. Also, we found food seemed equal or a bit less expensive though choices are more limited.

I really can't believe that the discussion is around such ludicrously high prices! Unfortunately I've missed Kat -in - the - hat's trip and I hope you had a ball.
Until the end of October, Thailand is in 'low season' which means that it's the best time to strike a bargain. In a medium sized hotel you should be looking to negotiate 10,000 baht (about $320) for a months stay. So forget about the $100 dollars a night.
Of course, the hotel's website will tell a different story but when you approach any half full hotel in Thailand with that offer - they will accept. Believe me - I'm 1/2 Thai and have a part share in a hotel - 1/2 price is better than no price!
As for Thai boxing - every night in Phuket if that's your cup of tea!
