Arrived Bangkok yesterday and gave the Orienatl a try. The room was beautiful although smaller than my room at both the Pen and the Four Seasons. As for which is the best...the Pen or the Oriental...Well, I'd choose the Oriental over the Pen...although I felt the Oriental a bit over the top in service and food prices and a bit chee-chee. I got tired of all of the staff around. I couldn't be happier to be back at the Four Seasons! When I arrived, my room wasn't ready so I was told an hour wait. So, I had lunch. Well, after an hour it still wasn't ready so the desk clerk didn't want me to wait any longer so he upgraded me for free to one of the newly renovated rooms in the new wing. Fabulous! Flatscreen plasma TV...DVD player and videos that can be checked out through the concierge. I couldn't be happier.Home sweet home! I'm glad I tried the Oriental though. I think my mom would like it if I bring her for a vacation. I'd stay there a night with her and then back over to the Four Seasons. Anyhow, I've got to go. E-mail is expensive here at the hotel. But, I didn't have time to go to an internet cafe since I'm going out to Bed Supper Club this evening. Happy Travels!

Guen-- Glad you enjoyed the Oriental more than the Penn (if I recall you liked the latter even less than I did). And glad you're back "home". I think for many of us there is a bangkok hotel that is our "home" and it's hard for any other hotel to come close. For you it's the 4 Seasons, for me it's the Oriental, for Kathy it's Royal Orchid, for Bob it's Marriott.

Gloria... Yes, as for which to choose between the Pen and the Oriental...for me it was hands down the Oriental.Oh, Da over at Cotton House sends many greetings. She's doing quite a few garments for me...all ethnic looking, of course. She'll deliver them to me over here at the Four Seasons. Thank goodness she had a few pieces of cotton batik. I wish I had bought more batik while I was in Ghana, west Africa. Happy Travels!

Carol...I went to the Bed Supper Club last night and on a scale of 1-10 it gets a 9.75. It was great! The food gets a perfect 10. I'm glad I went. It's so nice and hip and the R&B 70s updated music was THE best. It just really made you want to dance in bed!I took two Thai friends along and they loved it. They live in Bangkok and had never been...probably due to the price...1097Baht for the 4 course meal..excluding drinks. But, it was worth every baht! Take care. Happy Travels!

Bob...I'm only staying at two hotels this time. It was the Oriental and now I'm at the Four Seasons. It's hard to even get out of bed here...with the huge Phillips flatscreen TV, it's like being at a movie theater! How relaxing...a REAL vacation! Happy Travels!

Hawaiian Traveler and Hobbes...Info about the Four Seasons. Hobbes, I know you adore this hotel as much as I do. The new renovated wing is open.Wonderful. Updated, a wee bit of modern, but they kept it classical Thai, too. The colors...very soothing... deep cranberry reds and browns and a beautiful new deep gold colored carpeting. The bathrooms are the same as they said that guests don't spend that much time in the bathroom. The bathrooms were fine as they were. I asked last year, when they told me of the upcoming renovations, if they would keep the Thai mural over the bed...and they said that they would and thank goodness they did.So, it's the best of two worlds. And I know Hawaiiantraveler, it will be your first stay at the FS. I was just talking to the guy who gave me the free upgrade which I just found out was a 4th step upgrade...I thought it was a one step one. Boy, did I REALLY get lucky. Anyhow, the rooms levels go as follows....1) Moderate(40sq.meters) 2) Superior(42sq.meters) 3)Deluxe...in the old(unrenovated wing which is very nice)(42sq.meters) 4)Deluxe-NEW...this is where I am(42sq.meters) and $300. which I'm not paying...I was told there are lots of specials though...so Hawaiian Traveler and Mrs.HT...go for this room 5)Jr.Suite(77sq.meters)$380.00 6)Premier Room(77sq.meters)$410.00 7)Superior Suite 84sq.meters and last, but not least 8)Deluxe Suite(120sq.meters)$650. The hotel is only about 7 stories high so it has a real intimate feel. And Hawaiian traveler, I think you two will love it because although it's a 5-star hotel it has that Hawaiian/ West Coast laidback feel to it....you know...classy, but casual. Anyhow, hope this has helped. Take care. Got to go. I have SO much to do today until I don't even know where to start! Happy Travels!

guen---i just closed my eyes....i can see you sitting just inside the main front door, not far from the largest flower display in bkk, sipping some lime juice in a large martini glass which was served on a silver tray surrounded by orchids....you are way off in your thoughts listening to the wonderful music being played by the combo in the lobby...there is a very formal affair this evening at the seasons and you are just loving all the activity and the fancy dress hapening (too bad gloria is not there to share it with you--people watching)...enjoy...i just opened my eyes and i am sitting in my computer room not on the next couch to you...damn...

I'm so glad you enjoyed Bed Supper Club. I'll be dining there in about 4 weeks. Can't wait!
I just had notification from travelocity about special rates to BKK from ORD. UAL wasn't one of the options, but for anyone wanting a cheap fare soon, it's worth looking at. JAL as low as $505. I didn't go digging into the "rules" because I don't need a ticket right now.
Happy condo hunting. I'll be anxious to hear your report because son and two of his friends who travel there for 4-6 weeks at a time would like to own a place of their own.
Please report on the weather you are having, if you don't mind.
Have a great time! See you in BOS.

This is totally off topic, but if you travel to Europe a lot, you might enjoy the thread on "your inner European" on that forum. I came out to be "Russian"!! I thought for sure it would be Italian. I wonder if it's a random answer... interesting anyway. Have a look.
