guenmai; great report. if you are going back to katong again, why not go about 5-10 more and go to east coast restaurant, and have some great seafood. can you have crab or sting ray? anyway, save some for me.

Kuranosuke...I'll eat anything that swims in water...except people!Ha...HA...HA... Anyhow, I went back to Sabai last night and had some other dishes. The waiters/waitresses were so nice to me. They watch me as I type in my electronic organizer. One waiter asked whom I was writing a column for and I explained that it was for folks on the Asia forum. He asked for the website. Anyhow, last night I had #64 Pahd Graprao Moo, Gung Plameuk...which was a spicy stir fry with either mixed seafood, prawn or squid with chilies, fresh peppercorns(very hot...don't bite into one...remove them from the dish...they look just like the rattles on a rattlesnake),and holy basil. It was supurb. For a starter I had #42...Dtom Khaa Pla Gung which was a soup of coconut and galanga with either fish or prawns and chilies, fish sauce, and fresh lime. This soup was beyond belief. While taking my first spoon full, I think I heard the angels sing. It was amazingly good...absolute perfection...a 10-plus! I told the waitress and she said she'd tell the chef. I told her they should give the chef a raise for that soup alone! Then for dessert, I went with the durian in coconut sauce...a warmed dish... with something else in it which I can't remember. Well...that was scary. Not that it was bad, but I just couldn't stomach it. I took one mouth full and a Freddy Kruger look came over my face. I told the waitress that I couldn't eat it. She apologized...it wasn't her fault...it was just one of those acquired taste things. She was so kind as to bring me something else. I went with the sticky rice and mango again which the second time was as heavenly as the night before. And to drink, I had the most delicious and cooling drink I've ever had.I can still taste it. The waitress recommended it to me so she brought me out a small glass of it first so that I could try it out. I then told her to bring out a whole glass. It was lime juice, with crushed ice and flavored with the anchan flower...which is a Thai flower. The drink was pink in color and had a slice of lime in it along with a small bit of a leaf. It was beyond incredible. I have never tasted such a flavor before and I've also never heard of this drink before. So, the staff asked if I'd be back tonight and I told them possibly. There are so many dishes on their menu. There's even a whole page and a half of just vegetarian dishes which I haven't even gotten to yet. On a scale of 1-10,as far as I'm concerned, the food gets a 9.90. Oh, Kuranosuke, I don't know if I'll get to East Coast, to eat or not on this trip. I'd have to take a taxi and I don't know if I want to pay for a taxi. The funds are running a bit low right now. Yesterday, my friend at Tanglin Shopping Centre gave me an incredible deal on some kebaba jewelry. It is antique estate jewelry made in 1922 by a Sri Lankan jeweler in Singapore whom she said was the best. It's 22karat gold. She reduced it by 50% which was amazing. She thought that I should have it ...proper jewelry to go with my custom-made kebeya. So, I couldn't turn that down. So,it's good she's invited me to lunch today...because the funds are headed in the direction of Burger King right now! Anyhow, take care. Happy Travels!

Kathie...I hope you're getting all of this food talk down so that you can try some of these dishes when you get back to Singapore!Oh, by the way...it's very strange to see machine-gun armed guards in some of the MRT-subway stations in Singapore. My Singaporean friend tells me that they have been on high alert ever since the London bombings. One other time that I was here I noticed guards, but not in the MRT. Take care. Happy Travels!

Sorry to butt in but.

The Babas (males) and Nonyas (females)are from the Peranakan race, a mix of Chinese and Malays indigenous to Malaysia (and Singapore). It was some time in the 15th century when Chinese Princess Hang Li Poh arrived in Malacca to marry its Sultan. Her entourage intermarried with the local Malays and the Babas and Nonyas are their descendents. The Peranakan race has its own culture (hence, costumes), food (Nonya food), and language(generally sounds like Malay). Hope that was educational in some way

Janna, educational input is always welcomed here! I didn't know all the history associated with it.

Guenmai, you'd better believe I'm taking notes! This restuarant sounds fabulous.

Folks...I was joking about Burger King! Oh, yesterday a Singaporean friend/shop owner treated me to lunch and took me too a great western place called Marmelade. The food was wonderful. The place was crowded...packed...It's in the same building, on Orchard Road, with the Jim Thompson store. It's down in the basement. After entering the building you can either take the elevator down to the basement or walk down the stairs located in front of the Jim Thompson store. I didn't know this restaurant was even there. The building is across the street from the California Pizza Kitchen up in the section of Orchard Road that's nearing Tanglin Road. I have the business card, but it's in my room. Got to go. Have lots to do before I leave for Bangkok tomorrow. Happy Travels!

the after GTG car tour has been planned...i will write it up and xerox it so that we can go in seperate cars and still know what is being passed....

i think we can squeeze it into 6-8 hours without stops...there will be a quiz afterwards...we may have sightings along the way: like orgy on a street corner, or kuranosake at the top of a lite pole or ratt directing traffic....there will also be a chao payra drive by....sightings will gain you extra credit on the quiz....

Kuranosuke/Kathie...Since you two are the Singapore fans, I thought I'd send you this info. Anyhow, I'm in the airport now heading for Bangkok. Yesterday I decided to try a restaurant called True Blue which is owned by the kebaya maker who's doing my kebaya. He owns the shophouse. The restaurant was great. You enter the shophouse and are then lead through a hidden door and up a staircase where there is this great restaurant that was voted best new restaurant in Singapore. It's at 117 East Coast Road Tel...64400449 A reservation is a must for dinner. It's Paranakan food and is very tasty. We have a Paranakan restaurant where I live which is very good, but this one is a different style of Paranakan food. I went for lunch. They are closed on Mondays. Lunch goes until around 3:00PM and then they reopen for dinner at 6 if I remember correctly. Go during the day if you haven't been in that area before. It's very interesting on that block. There's a great Paranakan shop house called Rume Bebe(sp?) right next door to the restaurant. The owners are a lovely elderly couple who love to chit-chat and show you their shop. They do Paranakan custom beaded slipper, handbags, kebayas, and sell Paranakan jewelry,too...a beautiful shop. Oh, Kuranosuke...Clarke's Quay is open although not totally finished and you would not recognize it! If you're there and get thirsty go into the tapas bar and have a lime juice which was absolutely cooling and delicious. I had two! Well, got to go. The computer is running out of time. Happy Travels!

I'll keep you posted, Kathie. I'm at the gate now. There's free internet access everywhere now. I definitely don't remember it being at the gate last summer. Take care. Happy Travels!
