BKK shopping questions
Much has been written about where to shop.
Looking for small electronics (MP6 player).
Someone wrote a specific post a few months back and I've spent altogether too much time trying to find it, so I'll ask again.
With limited time to shop, want to indulge MDH and his buddy with something fun to shop for (for me I hope). Can someone cut to the chase and tell me specifically which store or at least narrow it down to a floor if it's in a plaza/mall that we should go directly too. Hate to waste valuable time searching for something someone has already found.

I have heard from European friends that they can find electronics more cheaply in Asia than in Europe. If you live in the US, you'll find electronics more cheaply at home. As you probably know, there are also warranty problems with buying electronics in Asia.

Well, now... a friend with whom I was traveling last February bought 3 MP3 players for his kids, at Pantip, for what he thought was a better price than in Chicago! I guess it all depends upon what you are buying.
He also paid less for a little Canon digital camera than he had seen in Chicago.

pantip is the place for electronics....also on the upper floors of mbk you will find some electronics....traditionally electronics were not a bargain in thailand, but last year there was some law/regulation/tax changes which brought them more in line with other asian destinations...
patnip in is the pratnam section near to the amari watergate hotel....take a taxi there....have your hotel give the taxi instructions on how to get there...
there is good market shopping in that same area....

I don't think the 20% levy on electonic goods has been loward yet.. I think I posted a while ago that it would be but this is thailand everything moves at a snails pace if at all.
SIMPSON.. tell your fraind the trick is buying from the internet.
------------
As far as MP3 players go it is now becoming the must have status symbal itam. many of the former cell phone vendors are now selling just MP3 and other portable audio players. you may find a MP3 player that is fairly cheep but it will most likely be a crappy chinise item with without an international waranty. IF you shop around online you can find a simaler item from a respectable name brand for $20 more but will offfer way batter value and quality.
trust me I wish electonics were cheeper here. I would not have too
1. buy electronics online
2. have it sent to my pops in Connecticut.
3 have him UPS it bangkok
4.. wory that those jerks at customs chsrge me a heavy fee
5 wait all day for the UPS guy too show up..

We priced MP3s in Bkk a couple of weeks ago and they were still dearer than in Australia. Camera prices have come down now though. Still not quite as cheap as Singapore but close - just not such a good range. Computer prices still quite high too. Its only the odd bits like extra leads etc that are very well priced.

Carol, In my experience the best prices for electronics in the US are on the web. WHile I can imagine that your friend might have found MP3s for less than a retail store in Chicago, I would still expect your friend to find better prices on the web in the US. I've comparison shopped a number of times for electronic items and have not found better prices in Asia than what I can find on the internet at home.

Orgy - I just mean the cables that attach computers, printer and other bits together. My husband is forever changing bits around and we often find we need different leads - you can buy them cheaply in Pantip and also the different end plugs that you sometimes need. Sorry for not being clearer.

laurieco: keep your ipod. My typing fingers went faster than technology...meant MP3. I agree about buying on the internet, that's what I do, but made the assumption there would be really good deals since I hear about all the electronics there. Not sure I really want an MP3 anyway, just wondering.
