A Netflix series for those who enjoy Tokyo
Someone in the Lounge recommended this series, and Cheryl and I have been enjoying it. It's called Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories. It is a series of short stories about life in Japan. I think it is exceptionally well done. The opening credits show Shinjuku and are a reminder of our trip to Japan a few years ago.

Kathie,
Good recommendation, the opening sequence camera work and music are great and the different stories interesting, some good cooking tips as well.
Also on Netflix are the Japanese TV shows Atelier, and Terrace House, which are fun to watch for some cultural insight.

I also enjoyed Midnight Diner on Netflix - which I rejoined - after reading DonTopaz's post....
From what I read on the Japanese wikipedia site translated into English, that one is actually the fourth series. Three earlier ones were on Japanese TV - made in 2009, 2011 and 2014. The story started out as a manga in 2006.
Don't know if earlier seasons are available with or without English subtitles...

Thanks kalihiwai2. I read the descriptions of Terrace House and Atelier to decide which to watch first. The former sounds like a reality show and the latter is about a young woman starting her career in the lingerie industry. So, I chose Atelier because I love fabric!
I had just watched a grim movie and thought I should watch a stand-up comedian show next to brighten my mood. But, I chose Atelier and have to say that I haven't laughed that hard for quite a while. Mayuko kawaii desu.

I put Atelier on my Netflix list - now I am watching Good Morning Call - it's about two high school students who accidentally end up living in the same apartment - it's cute- I like it more for listening to the way they speak - very casual and hard to understand...I'm studying Japanese....

I put Good Morning Call on the list last night when I finished Atelier.
Atelier does get sappy. The main character is the young Mayuko. The proprietor, the artist of the atelier, is Mayumi. The actress who played her was 59 when the show was released.
