A Netflix series for those who enjoy Tokyo

Someone in the Lounge recommended this series, and Cheryl and I have been enjoying it. It's called Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories. It is a series of short stories about life in Japan. I think it is exceptionally well done. The opening credits show Shinjuku and are a reminder of our trip to Japan a few years ago.

Kathie, I too have been enjoying it.

thanks

Kathie,
Good recommendation, the opening sequence camera work and music are great and the different stories interesting, some good cooking tips as well.

Also on Netflix are the Japanese TV shows Atelier, and Terrace House, which are fun to watch for some cultural insight.

We loved Tokyo Diner and sad when it was finished. Such a lovely show, beautifully done.

Thanks, too, kali, for the recommendations for the Japanese TV shows. We will check them out.

We will check out your recommendations, Kalihiwai. Does anyone know if they are going to do another season of Midnight Diner?

mrwunrfl Feb 17th, 2017 06:05 AM

DonTopaz posted about it in the Lounge. I loved it. I believe that there is a second season available online.

Kathie Feb 17th, 2017 06:45 AM

Thanks, mrwunrfl, I was thinking it was Don, but I couldn't find the post. We haven't found a second season online yet. It's a Netflix original series, I'll see if I can find anything.

Thanks for sharing these films, tv shows.

Thanks Kathie, will watch tonight.

I also enjoyed Midnight Diner on Netflix - which I rejoined - after reading DonTopaz's post....

From what I read on the Japanese wikipedia site translated into English, that one is actually the fourth series. Three earlier ones were on Japanese TV - made in 2009, 2011 and 2014. The story started out as a manga in 2006.

Don't know if earlier seasons are available with or without English subtitles...

Thank you, Mara, we will look for those.

Smeagol Feb 18th, 2017 08:48 PM

Thanks for that Kathie.. we are thinking of getting Netflix so will look out for it when we get it.

Thanks kalihiwai2. I read the descriptions of Terrace House and Atelier to decide which to watch first. The former sounds like a reality show and the latter is about a young woman starting her career in the lingerie industry. So, I chose Atelier because I love fabric!

I had just watched a grim movie and thought I should watch a stand-up comedian show next to brighten my mood. But, I chose Atelier and have to say that I haven't laughed that hard for quite a while. Mayuko kawaii desu.

mrwunrfl Feb 19th, 2017 05:26 AM

-> Mayuko-chan wa kawaii desu.

Kathie Feb 19th, 2017 06:21 AM

Thanks for your review, mrwunrfl, I think that is the next show we will watch!

Mara Feb 20th, 2017 09:00 AM

I put Atelier on my Netflix list - now I am watching Good Morning Call - it's about two high school students who accidentally end up living in the same apartment - it's cute- I like it more for listening to the way they speak - very casual and hard to understand...I'm studying Japanese....

mrwunrfl Feb 26th, 2017 10:35 AM

I put Good Morning Call on the list last night when I finished Atelier.

Atelier does get sappy. The main character is the young Mayuko. The proprietor, the artist of the atelier, is Mayumi. The actress who played her was 59 when the show was released.
