3 or 4 days and hostels in Hong Kong Oct 1-4,2012

Hi,
After a month traveling in China, I'm planning on spending the last few days in Hong Kong.

I'd like to see the main sites of HK, city walks, neighborhooods, and also spend time exploring nearby islands. Should I plan on 3 or four days for this?

Oct 1 is a holiday in HK, so should I try to be there for it? or should I avoid it? What's it like?

Any suggestions on hostels? I've been advised to stay away from the Chung King Mansion.

Thanks,

The week of October 1st is a holiday in China so HK will be full of Chinese tourists.
HK can be seen in 3 days, 4 days, even 2 weeks. It just depends on how deeply you want to get into it.

In general, more time is better in Hong Kong, but it's quite an expensive city. So you need to balance how long to stay with how long you can afford to stay.

3 full days is adequate to cover the main sights of HK. With another full day, I recommend spending that one in Macau.

For alternatives to Chungking Mansion, I suggest you ask on Lonely Planet.

3 full days should be enough to cover the main sights and take a trip to Lamma or another outlying island. As for October 1st, main tourist attractions (the Peak) will be crowded, and the malls will be packed with Chinese tourists. it shouldn't be too bad unless you plan on buying luxury goods.
