Problems with Delta upgrades

Delta has been our airline of choice due to the availability of routes to where we need to go. We have achieved medallion status the last two years. We received an upgrade certificate to be used in 2002 which I thought could be used on any flight . We had booked a RT trip to Portland,OR from Tampa through Orbitz and had planned to use the certificate but they won't honor it. I fail to see why MOST of their fares are not upgradeable. They are not rewarding their freuent flyers at all; rather they make it very difficult. We just returned from a European trip and had absolutely no hassle at all in upgrading on USAir and had booked the least expensive fare on Orbitz. We are really quite fed up with Delta. Anyone else having the same experience?

I'm surprised that you're surprised. Delta posts the eligible fares on their upgrade certificates. The most liberal is AA they will upgrade anything. Continental is the most restrictive.

Are you able to read the rules which apply to your ticket? Recently Delta changed their upgrade policy. I believe it is only allowed when tickets are full coach (y) or B and maybe M . But no lower than that. Most cheap tickets are booked in Q, K, L, U on Delta. It's not's your friends at Delta.

Don't be surprised when trying to use Delta FF miles on a Delta plus code share partner combination flight if you can't get a seat.
We wanted to use Delta to Atlanta, Air Jamaica to MoBay. When you look at the flights on any of the online services, even Delta's own site, the AJ flights are shown as Delta flights, with an 88 prefix. One would think the whole deal fell under Delta's control. Not so. We were told Delta has to submit a request for the seats to AJ on a one flight at a time basis. AJ gives a response within 24 hours. We tried 9 different dates over this summer to make a connection to use the FF award. 9 days after we started we were left with NO AVAILABILITY on any of the AJ flights.
We had a travel agent handling this for us (for a small fee) she finally found out from the Delta person she was talking with on the 9th and final try that AJ is very very very stingy with giving up FF seats to Delta.
We ended up buying the tix.
That led to another discovery. For each of the dates we looked at (work schedule problems left only certain weekend and weekdays available) the flights showed Delta from our airport to Atlanta and the Delta codeshare AJ flight to MoBay at fares in the $550-600 range. But on Wednesday Aug 24, the flights came up as Delta to Atlanta, and Air Jamaica to MoBay with a fare of $470.
Now, what is that all about? Does Delta load $$$ on top of the AJ fare?

I tried to upgrade on delta and to do so i would have had to buy a ticket for 750 instead of the lower fare of 400. That was last year seattle to tampa. I won't bother with them unless i have to because of that policy. I always try to fly united and have never been denied an upgrade. Flexability is the key in most cases and sometimes an extra stop if you are going out of the country.

That is because their is a fare sale after Aug 17.
Air Jamaica has been running full all summer because of very competitive pricing this year. If they have revenue passengers, they do not need to give Delta free seats.
Delta is resuming their own flight this fall.
To A travel pro:
I saw DL had a 737-800 to MoBay under its own label starting Nov 1 +/-. Do you know if this will continue through summer, or is this an in season deal only?
