NW gets really mixed reviews. Their international service is generally ranked much better than domestic. They used to have one of the oldest fleets in the air, but they've finally gotten rid of their DC 9s and DC 10s. Their A320s can be fairly comfortable. As worktowander says, they've had some well-publicized flight delays and cancellations this year (the reason depends on who you talk to - but the delays existed regardless). Hard to know if these will continue.
It is not our favorite airline, but for service/attitude issues - NOT safety issues. For a relatively short flight, I'd take them - just don't expect much (as with almost any domestic flight these days). In fact our DD is flying them to MSP next month for a family gathering.
I'd certainly pick them over US.
