What Airline

All of these airlines fly Tokyo, Japan and are very close in price. Could anyone share their thoughts of which to choose. The only airline I have flown is Delta and they are way overpriced for this trip.

Northwest 747
All Nippon 747
Japan Airlines 747
United 777
American 747
US Air 777

Like I stated before, all of these are within 20 dollars in price so my choice is which is best. Oh BTW although I wish I could afford FC I can't so coach is the way I will travel.

Thanks
Bob

Depends what's important to you, but none of these standout more than others.
American does not fly a 747 but a 777. They have MRTC, more room throughout coach, so if space is important they are winners in that department.
I'm not sure about Northwest, but the other 3 domestic airlines charge for alcoholic drinks now.
JAL and Nippon do not as far as I know.
Food will be about the same on all and I believe they all have individual screens.
You may also consider which one would be the best connection or possibly no connection. That may also play a role in your decision as the flight over the pacific is a long one so you really don't want to backtrack or spend too much time at the connecting airport.

I knew there was something wrong with your list.

USAir does not fly to Tokyo, they codeshare with United, so you would be flying on United for the over the water portion. if you bougth the USAir ticket.

USAir also does not have any 777s, so maybe you were thinking Continental? USAirs biggest plane is the Airbus 330-300, which is used mostly between US-Europe.

Whichever airline you choose, make sure you sign up with their frequent flyer program, as that's a nice chunk of miles you will collect.

Hope this helps.

I'm sorry, all those flights were non-stop JFK-NRT. I just took all those flights from Orbitz and also from a few of the airline sites. All the prices were within 20 dollars of each other and I was just wondering, having never flown overseas which airline might be better.

Thanks again

Bob

Just an observation:

I would think about ANA "All Nippon" or
JAL "Japan Air Lines". Just for the fact they are "native" [Japanese] carriers. Would be interesting to fly. Also I have read good reviews on both of their service.

Both of these carries have been more expensive when I have priced them.

The hot towels are to wash your hands!!

enjoy!

That's why all the confusion with the plane types.

On that route AA and JAL codeshare their flights. AA has it's own flight but also puts their flight number on JAL flight and the same is true in reverse. That's why you saw AA flight using a 747, because that particular one is flown by JAL. Flighgt AA167 is AA metal, and flight AA7201 is JAL metal.

With USAir it's something similar, but in this case USAir does not fly to Tokyo on their own equipment, they just put a USAir flight number on the United direct flight. Thats why you saw a 777.

You may also want to check with Continental. They fly a non-stop to Tokyo as well on a 777.

You may want to be careful with the 747s. Some of the older ones do not have individual screens. I don't think Northwest has individual screens in coach. Not sure about the coach product on JAL or Nippon, so make sure you check with the airlines if that's important to you.

I already replied in the Asia forum, but will give more detail about the service on all the NYC-Tokyo service.

AA - 777. Personal video screen in each seat. More room through coach, meaning 33-34in seat pitch, instead of 31in on other airlines.

ANA - 747-400. All seats have AVOD (audio/visual on demand). So, not only do you have a personal screen, but you can start/stop/rewind whatever you're watching anytime. Other airlines with personal video runs them in a loop.

CO - 777 from Newark. Personal video on each seat. Standard seat pitch of about 31in.

JAL - Two 747-400 flights from JFK per day. [One flight has 3 class of service, the other (JL005/006) with just 2 - most of it being a "Shell Flat" business class.] Personal video screen on all economy seats.

NW - 747-400. This is the worst of all NYC-Tokyo service. No extra legroom, and the only flight without even personal video screen in coach seats. Plain old projector in each cabin.

UA - 777 from JFK. Personal video on each seat. Standard pitch of 31in, but the front half of the economy cabin is Economy Plus, with 34in of legroom. Even though you're not a Mileage Plus elite member, you may try to get one of those seats on day of travel.

So, there you go. 7 flights a day from 6 airlines (all with one, except JL with 2). 6 from JFK, one from EWR (CO). 3 on 777, 4 on 747-400, no airbuses.

And here are the code-share partners. You will see partner's flight on timetables. If you see a flight number over 2000, it's almost certain to be codeshare. Particularly on this route, as most airlines have very low flight numbers (except UA's 800/801):

Star Alliance - including ANA, UA, USAir. For example, UA9683 JFK-NRT is actually ANA flight NH009.

AA/JL - For example, AA7200 NRT-JFK is actually JL006.

DL/CO/NW - For example, NW6009 EWR-JFK is actually CO 009.

And, you mentioned in the other thread that you have Delta FF miles. DL doesn't fly this route on its own, but you can earn DL Skymiles on CO and NW's flight. For most discount economy fares, you earn 1 FF mile per mile flown (i.e. about 13,000 for the roundtrip), and usually 50% Medallion Qualifying Miles (i.e. about 6,500) for Delta's elite status.
