The Mexican government has been, for a few years, looking to privatize both Mexicana and Aeromexico. They have now engaged a firm (Merrill Lynch, I think) to handle the process but it will likely require at least a year or two to make any progress. Neither airline is in danger of ceasing operations. Book away - soon, because the availability of those good fares can be quite limited!

Both airlines are actually private owned by Cintra, a large Mexican conglomerate.
As for MX, it's OK - just like a US airline, except that the FA's tend to be younger and more "attractive".
What I would definitely go for is a flight on a 757! They fly A320's and 757's to Chicago, and the A320 are NOT equipped with in-flight entertainment, while the 757's are.

But luckily they had you: the Great White Hope on board to turn up your nose in disdain Kam. I think maybe you have watched Romancing the Stone a few too many times. I fly Mexicana and Aeromexico all the time and have never seen the livestock show you paint the portrait of. What I have seen, in many cases, are decent, simple people excited to be able to afford the extravagence of air travel [as opposed to a hard train ride] to visit their families. Lighten up.
