Maintaining UA Million-Miler status

I remember reading somewhere that there was a minimum number of flights per (18 mos? 2 yrs?) required to maintain UA Million Miler status.

1. Anyone know if this is true? I can't find anything about it on the UA site.

2. If it is true, does flying on a free ticket (purchased with miles) count toward maintaining status?

I never thought I'd be concerned about this, but we used Alaska for our annual Kauai trip this year, and we've booked our Asia trip for Nov with miles. We will need to decide whether to fly UA or Alaska for our next Kauai trip, and the answer to this question will make a difference in our decision.

Are you certain about the flying requirement to maintain MM with UA? I have never heard of that and have been MM since they started offering that recognition. There is a requirement that to earn an annual elite status at least four paid flights must be on UA but once you make MM status it is good for life.

Good for life.

From the UA website:

The Million Miler program grants lifetime Premier status to all qualifying members, even if they fly less in the future.

As a Million Miler you may invite your spouse or significant other to share your current Premier status. This membership is non-transferable and will automatically renew each year unless you let us know otherwise.

AA has an almost identical program. Once you reach 1 million, you're good for life as their Gold member (lowest elite tier).

I'm over 1 million, but probably won't hit 2 million, which I believe is Platinum for life (middle tier).

AA is not so good at advertising these benefits.

Yes, on AA 2 million gets you Platinum for Life but it's 2 million "butt in seat miles". Up until about 2 years ago you could combine actual flight miles with miles earned with purchases made on an AAdvantage Citicard to earn "permanent status" (that's how I earned my Permanent Platinum Status) but now only flight miles count toward "permanent status".

About 95% of my 1.2m miles are butt in seat miles.

I was always the "let's send Rastaguy" to places like Taiwan, Singapore, East L.A, Toledo, Texas in the summer and Toronto in the winter. It happened so often, it got to be a joke.

Nothing like a trip to the far east in coach. 14 hours of living hell. I was once "upgraded" to an exit row seat, next to the lavatories. 14 hours of people stepping on your feet, and lovely smells.

Thanks all. I'm glad to hear that what I read about a continued flight requirement is apparently not true.

Rastaguy - What a tough way to earn your status. Just think, only 800K miles to go. Oh Boy!

Rastaguy... lol!! I've done that as well (the sitting by the restroom and getting feet stepped on). Just got off a flight from Zurich last night that was that EXACT situation! Plus, the flight was full of tiny tots. That restroom was used for more diaper changes that I could begin to count!!
