LAX user-UNFRIENDLY
We have just had the worst airport experience at LAX. WHAT A MESS! I usually use SEA/TAC, SFO, PDX, ORD, DFW, SJU (San Jaun PR) or MIA. There is no way to get from terminal to terminal in LAX without leaving security. There are hand printed signs that tell you to take the "A" bus on the lower level. They don't say that you have to go to the far end of the lower level. The busses are not marked so heaven forbid that you get on the wrong bus to a remote parking lot. The driver's think that you should know what they know and since the announcements inside the bus do direct the passengers terminal to terminal, once you are on the right buss you can get to your terminal. BUT the passengers curbside don''t have any directions. It took us an hour to get from terminal 7 to terminal 4. Going back through security there were 15 TSAs NOT working and 6 who were working two check points. We had a change of planes in Miami and although the hallways between terminals in the secure area were temporary, they were well marked. It was a 15 minute walk and actually easier than the old way of going out to the lobby/shopping concourse. For a major international hub, LAX is to be avoided. They aren't even trying to accomodate their inter-terminal passengers.

There are walkways inside security between certain terminals - like 5/6/7, and there are airside buses between certain terminals like 3/4.
But going through any airport with an usual transfer between different airlines - 7 to 4 is one of those - you should have come here to ask first.
Like ms_go says, we'll tell you to just walk between those two.
Anyways, LAX isn't that bad, unless you have to use the TBIT. The other terminals are mostly fine, and delays at LAX pale in comparison to those in the northeast.

I see nothings changed this story happened about 10 years ago to me. Flew in from San Francisco to catch 7pm KLM to Holland. SFO flight late so they had bus waiting for passengers to take to int terminal. Lady driving the bus didn't have a clue it was one of those with the accordian type middle tried to turn into a parking lot and got the bus stuck. When asked why she was turning into parking lot she said she thought it would be a short cut. It was not, it was a simple parking lot clearly marked as long term parking. After going backward and forward, calling her boss etc. several men got her out of drivers seat and got the thing moving, and one drove on to the correct terminal while she sat and cried. Arrived at terminal, he stopped the bus we all jumped out and rushed to our various gates, got through to plane got on, plan started moving while we walked down the asile, people staring. Passenger mentions to me that she could not understand the weather delay and asked if it was raining, she was next to window on a lovely southern california evening.

It is confusing. If you happen to speak English, arriving at T7, then you hear that you have to go to catch the bus under the Blue sign. If you go to the right out of the terminal that is the wrong way. Go left and walk practically to T6 before you see the blue sign.
I park in Lot C. The shuttle signboard clearly shows that it goes to C Lots. But just about every time there are people boarding the C bus who end up getting off after the bus driver explains that it is not a terminal shuttle.
Often, by the time the shuttle gets to T7 it is near full. Maybe some of the people who need the "A" bus don't hear the driver and stay on. They are screwed because the next stop for the shuttle is a stop for the city bus terminal and rental car lots, just in front of Lot C. Those people would get a nice tour of Lot C, eventually getting to the depot, then getting a new bus going back to the airport. I suppose that getting on the B lot bus would be worse.
From what I see it is easy for first timers to get hopelessly lost at LAX when changing terminals. At least I see it happens often enough.
Saying "the passengers curbside don't have any directions" is pretty accurate. You better well know before you land how to get to your terminal. Once you get on the A bus you have a good chance because of the "the voice", the driver, the display inside, and other pax, who can help you ID the terminal you want, if you don't know.

I 've flown through LAX almost exclusively my entire life ( because our tiny town only departs to LAX...!!)and have never once gotten lost.
You really need to do your research before your trip and when you get there, read the signs very carefully.
I do that everytime I fly, for every ariport... it comes in handy. I also ask the gate people... if I have a question at the last minute.

Although LAX has never been our favourite airport, we spent several hours in transit from Boston to Kona ten days ago, and had no problems whatsoever - although fortunately for us, both arriving and departing flights left from Terminal 4.
I agree with Moneygirl's advice - research for info on transport to various terminals - which we did for our other flight sections, and if necessary, print 'em out.
Although arriving and departing from the same terminal at LAX, we still had to go through a separate TSA security check when boarding our onward flight to Kona. Staff there were rather dictatorial without the usual courtesies, but not uncomfortably so.
There was one staff member going up and down the waiting line, issuing instructions, one of which was about not entering the personal xray screening until your cabin luggage had gone through xray. My bag was still five away from passing through, and the screening ladymanperson impatiently ordered me forward. "But my bag hasn't gone through screening" I offered. Totally ignoring my comment, I was impatiently ordered to come forward with the encouraging words "Come on, I don't bite!" Like I was some nervous nellie, lol! And truly, this was a womanmountain of michelin proportions with a soprano voice and a mustache!
So my hesitation could have been on entirely different grounds ... manwomanmountain being complete with white rubber gloves,
