Looking for flights from Los Angeles airport to Lihue, Kauai in late August. Trying to find a return flight from Lihue to LAX that is not a redeye and keep the fare under $1,000 each (3 of us flying). Any suggestions?

Have searched both Travelocity and Expedia but the prices jump dramatically to fly during the day. Have flown this route twice in the past 6 years but never ran into prices like this. If we take a redeye the cost is under $900, if we fly during the day it's as much as $2200!

Intend to stay less than a week. Thanks for any advice you can provide.

Maybe check the fares from one of the other islands or Honolulu. It might mean a short island hopper flight very early that morning or the night before, but since your only there a few days I'm not sure that would be worthwhile to you.

Just checked Kayak Hawaiian Airline seems to have R/T less than $800 PP. What I saw was Flt 3 LAX (10:30AM) to HNL connect 1:27 to Flt 353
HNL to LIH Landing 3:19PM.
Return trip Flt 104 leaving 6:34AM to HNL. 0:55 layover and HNL to LAX on Flt 10 landing at 4:20 PM.
Current fare is $764

I agree check going thru Honolulu for cheaper fares than a true nonstop to LA/Kauai.

Take a look at United. They have a flight leaving LAX at 9:10 am and arriving LIH just before noon. The return leaves LIH at 1:20 pm connects in SFO and arrives LAX just before midnight. Total cost for 3 adults is $2775 for Aug 25-31.

Personally, I don't consider a flight getting me home at midnight a redeye, but perhaps you do.

All depends on the date. UA non-stop 8/15-8/22 is $779.

Unfortunately we live far from LAX and landing at midnight means we'll actually get home about 2:00 a.m.

United has a 9:43am departure from Lihue, through Honolulu that arrives at LAX at 8:50pm and the cost is about $880 including taxes and fees. That's not bad, we would get home before midnight. And we don't mind going through Honolulu at all.

Delta also has a well-timed return flight but it's twice the cost of United. I'll watch and see if the price drops.

Have you tried Alaska Air? They have some great fare deals. Worth a shot.

Thanks for suggesting Alaska. They have NONSTOP code share flights with Delta and Amercian at reasonable times and under $900 each. We really appreciate the advice.
