LAX T4 to T1: 75 minutes enough time?

AA just emailed me a schedule change for December.

Originally Kona to LAX arriving at 5:30am, now it's changed to 5:55am.

After claiming our luggage from T4, we were planning on taking an independent flight on Southwest at 7:10am.

If this is sufficient time to make the connection? What do you think the minimum connection time should be?

Is the flight schedule likely to change again, maybe to be earlier an arrival (i.e., in my favor)?

Thx for any insights - enjoy-la!

I would not risk the Southwest flight, especially since you are checking luggage. You will have to claim luggage, transfer terminals, check into SW and then clear security. SW is busy in the early mornings.

Doable but you will have to get quickly off the plane and be pushy to get quickly into passport control and customs as the flights from Melbourne and Sydney come in around 6-6:30am and they are on those huge planes and are usually loaded. Ask if AA will book bags through because just as you leave customs there is a spot to drop them on your right, then you could just step outside get on the shuttle and hit your gate. But its close to be sure.

OP is arriving from Hawaii, a domestic flight.

Klam, have you ever seen the queues at Southwest at LAX in the mornings? Out on the street, down the block is not unusual.

Where are you going after LAX? I can't imagine AA couldn't get you there with far, far less hassle than playing musical terminals at LAX with an airline that won't accept interline tickets or bags. Even if you bought your ticket through Expedia or some such and had to fly from LAX to your destination on United, or Delta, or Alaska, or Air Canada or Westjet or... or... AA has interline agreements with all of them that would keep you from having to claim and recheck bags. After a red-eye from Hawaii, who needs the grief?

Meant to say, no, absolutely 75 min. is NOT enough time. With an AA > Southwest change at LAX I'd allow at least 2 1/2 hours, probably 3.

Though some still consider the annexation to be not quite legal and proper, Hawaii is part of the U.S. and thus passengers to Los Angeles therefrom do not partake in the fun of immigration & customs.

That said, there's no way I'd take a chance on the OP's itinerary. It can easily take 30-45 minutes for bags to be delivered, and that won;t give you enough time to haul over to the Southwest terminal and check in on time.

Thx a mint for all the replies and info! Fodorites are fab

I hear you loud and clear and won't do it.

Only been thru LAX a couple of times so am completely unfamiliar with its queues - glad I asked.

Trying to get to BUF by 6pm. I can book one thru AA but it's $1300+pp. If I do the SW thing it'll be about 60% cost. Problem is I'm flying on New Year's Eve so SW has a much reduced schedule, and the 7:10am flight is the last one to make it to BUF on time. So I'll drop my entrenched SW idea and pay the luggage fees.

Actually I just checked non-SW airlines for LAX > BUF and there's a United flight for $200! I searched months ago, but did not see these flights. SW was $385 so I'm way ahead!

Thx again, all - enjoy-la!

First time I can remember that prices have gone down while I am shopping!

When I posted yesterday the fare was $204 - I thought a fab price, but it arrived at 7:10pm so I wanted to check with DH before I booked. I stupidly forgot that United has a no-fee 24hr cancellation policy, and waited until last night where the fare had gone to $233pp. Oh well, still not bad but had to take care of some other stuff first.

I went to book it this morning and after I found the flight, and put in my FF#, I went to update my contact info, and it said it had to re-search my flight due to the change. When the flights refreshed, the fare dropped to $218! Pays for 60% of the luggage fee. And I can rest easy even if the other flight shifts a bit more, as this flight leaves at 10am.

Just wanted to share this nugget (if you've done your research and know it's a good fare book first, ask later and cancel if necessary).

Enjoy-la!
