Faina's post got me to thinking about the meals on this route. The itinerary only states dinner and nothing else. Is any sort of snack or breakfast served, as well? Surely there is something else on such a long flight.

Just like all other airlines flying over the Atlantic - dinner after departure, breakfast before arrival. In coach, it's nothing fancy, just edible. For breakfast, expect a croissant and jam and a few grapes, that kind of thing.

BF is entirely different. You can see the whole menu on continental for the current month. For example, this is EWR-FCO in Feb:

Also, if your mom wants more time to sleep, she can tell them to have the executive meal option. She still get to choose her entree, but the whole meal is served all at once, so she can go to bed quickly. But since her FCO flight leaves pretty early and it's a relatively long flight, she may want to enjoy the regular presentation.

My dad and I visited CO's tasting kitchen 2 months ago, and it was fabulous.

Thanks for the info, rkkwan. I had actually read the sample menu for BF before I booked the tickets, and even printed the menu to include in my mom's Christmas book I made about her upcoming trip.

I'm glad to hear that sis will at least get something other than dinner back in coach with it being such a long flight. Of course, she has threatened to put some ziplocks in mom's carry-on so that she can get any leftovers.

Still, I would never fly anywhere without bringing some sort of food with me - even a piece of fruit and a granola bar. Just for times like a few weeks ago when my husband spent a total of 9 hours on a plane (on and off 3 times) to fly from Boston-Washington, DC one way - bad weather, plane kept pulling away from gate and sitting out in neverland forever, etc.

And there is always the chance the food will in fact be, inedible.

1. food on the plane is like a lottery - you never know if you are a winner or a loser.

1a. there is always something to pick out anyway!

2. they serve drinks and snacks too.

3. it's always better to be on the safe side - have your own snacks and a bottle of water.

4. it's just an overnight flight, not a 10-day tour, and every airport sells food.

5. which brings me to another thing - when your mom lands at FCO, whatever it is, will she have some local currency in case she needs something urgent? I always have some for at least a snack and the shuttle fair, doesn't matter what the exchange rate is.

Remember, Statia's mom is flying BusinessFirst. Unless something happened with the caterer (like it was burned down the day before), I am sure she can find something to eat onboard.

Did you guys and gals read that menu?

Faina, yes I've told my sister to make sure she has Euros on her at arrival in case the ATM at the aiport is out of order. Sis is flying with mom on CO from the US and I will meet them at FCO on AF from the DWI a couple hours after their arrival. So, I'm sure they will want to grab a bite to eat and shop a bit, so I told sis to be sure to have local currency on them.

I do agree for those of us in coach that it's often better to have a little something in your bag on board in case you get hungry outside of meal times, although I rarely do bring something aboard with me. I can go quite awhile w/o eating as long as I have my big bottle of water.

rkkwan, yes that menu is fantastic. I'm afraid that if I were in BF I might never want to go back to coach again.
