Fmpden and others-be aware that liquor brought on board can be taken away from you if found. Some of the problems with bringing your own liquor on some of my flights are that the passengers were soooo drunk that they were denied entry into the US by immigration till they sobered up.

Also, after what happened to the US Airway flight makes me wish that people would think twice before popping their Ambien/sleeping pills before takeoff or drinking beyond abilities during the flight.Enough said...

No, just someone who would rather not be stuck next to a drunk at 35,000 feet.

andrews, let me guess:

Mormon, 7th Day Adventist, Baptist or just the average puritan American who still dreams of prohibition?"

Whoa calm down guys! I am about as far from religious as one can be and I also don't want to be next to someone drunk on a plane! That said, while I have never quite tested the limits as to how much alcohol one can get served on a flight like 1959 (asking for 2 drinks at once, that's bold! I salute you - I do agree that being able to have a drink or two to relax without the drama of pulling out your wallet is a huge perk to me (especially since I'm a very fearful flyer). It just feels more...civilized!

Yeah, pulling a wallet to pay for drinks on the plane is way too dramatic. I only use Continental Currency coupons to buy drinks on CO myself.

But I still need to pull my wallet to buy duty-free items on premier Asian and European airlines. Now, if they can fix that problem...

I fly all the time, and I really don't think any of the European/American airlines are that much different. I have had great experiences on KLM, SAA, Delta, United, Continental, Northwest on flights to Asia or Africa (both are really long flights). I have also had flights that weren't so good on Continental, SAA, United, AF, Lufthansa - but I really think it is the luck of the draw - it depends on the specific crew you have onboard that day on, and their attitude - I haven't found it to be an airline wide problem. I also think they do a really good job on food, considering what they are working with. Chicken and Beef are the 2 safe options with so many allergies, and our unwillingness to pay more money for flights. Food is certainly better on any of the airlines than it was in the 90s. Now, the Asian airlines - which I have never had the opportunity to fly - are supposed to be fabulous. They are well known for their service. That service comes with a price - and that is why I have never been able to fly them, even going to Asia. I still fly on planes that don't have the personal video, and it's certainly better than trying to watch a screen somewhere up front. I'm a reader - so I rarely watch movies at all, but - and I don't mean to be picking on anyone - we have to understand that the costs of tickets now are so reasonable, considering what you're getting, that we have to make personal choices. IF you want a more luxurious experience, either fly business or first class, or buy a ticket for the Asian airlines. Otherwise, go for price - which might not have all the ammenities. You can determine the ammenities on each flight by the type of plane, and information on the airline websites. The plane could change, but it's as good a place to start as any.

Well I just bought my ticket! Finally. I decided on EVA Air because a) the ticket was the absolute cheapest available ($660 one-way Houston-Bangkok), b) the EVA flights are on their new 77Ws which means the latest AVOD, c) the shortest route (25 hours, no layover over 2.5 hours).

All the American airlines were all well over $1100 for this route, and would most likely not have AVOD. (Not to mention no free drinks and worse food.)

The only other airline I would have preferred is Emirates - which these days seems like the best airline around (thanks to subsidies!) - but the price was nearly double (not worth it even with earning miles), and I would have had a 14-hr layover in Dubai which the airline would not cover a hotel for.

So EVA it is, I will let you know how it is!

p.s. just to clarify Debi: it's not the choice of protein that bothered me with the "beef or chicken" - it's rather the totally unappetizing description and presentation. I have yet to fly on an inter-continental flight with a European carrier where I wasn't given a menu with a nice description of all the courses. I can't remember the last time I got that on a U.S. airline!

I recently booked my flight to Bangkok with Korean Airlines. The thought of being able to fly from Atlanta across the United States on a foreign airline was the main reason. The airport in South Korea is rated as one of the best, and I like Korean food.

Avoid American Airlines when flying to Asia. Services don't exist--so I've been told. One pilot told me he keeps the fasten seatbelt sign on all the time so the 70 year old flight attendants can get around better.
