Flying through Canada with a stop in Munich and on to Rome
Hey folks - We're looking at flying to Rome on Air Canada through Munich and then on to Rome. Our return flight takes us from Venice back through Munich and then to Calgary before finally arriving back in the US.
Will we have to clear customs in Munich before heading to Rome and will we have to clear Munich and Calgary on the return and where might we run into pitfalls? Thanks

Customs isn't much of an issue (that is luggage) - it is likely Immigration is what you are asking about. You will go through Immigration (passport control) in Munich and Customs in Rome (your bags will go through to Rome).
There is no 'Immigration' when flying out other than them checking your passport at security /when you check in.
Not sure about Calgary -- if you stay airside my guess there is no immigration. But there is US immigration at some Canadian airports - Maybe someone else will know if YYC is one. If it is - then that is where you'll go through US immigration.

US Homeland Security operates customs and security clearance in a number of Canadian airports. Here is the link; Calgary is the first entry on the list

Would be helpful to know where you're starting from. Also, I doubt that you are flying through Munich on the way back, as I only know of flights to Calgary via Frankfurt.
The issue to me would be the return trip. If you are headed to the US, it is certain that you have to clear US customs and Immigration in Calgary. My question is whether or not you would need to also clear Canadian customs/immigration. If you were doing this in Toronto, Air Canada has an arrangement where US-bound passengers on overseas flights go to a separate area for their luggage, and they avoid having to clear Canada immigration/customs. I have no idea if Calgary has the same setup.
Also, keep in mind that your intra-Europe flights to/from Italy will be on Lufthansa, not Air Canada.
