I fail to see the comparison. Does Southwest have 13 hour flights where your choice of seats does matter? Do they charge thousands of dollars for their tickets?
I don't think so.
Southwest is great for the market they serve but they cannot be compared with BA on any level.

I'm with Paulchili ... we can't get any seat assignment until 24 hours before - only if we check in ONLINE.

The last Bloody Awful trip was a bit of a nightmare ... we were out for dinner at the 24 hour mark so couldn't get online until at the 21 hour mark - 3 hours late - and I could not even get 3 seats together at all. Next day when checking in (well, at bag drop) I asked to see if we could sit together but was shown a sign that the flight was VERY over-sold and they were seeking volunteers to give up seats.

So, paulchili is right that BA = Bloody Awful.

Heaven forbid if AA mrges with BA (very doubtful) as we are die-hard AA travellers.

BlueSea -
Thank you - I could not have said it any better.

Perhaps I should apologize. In my blind dislike of BA's policies I might have missed your sarcasm when referring to Southwest (although I like SW a lot, despite their open seating policy)
Perhaps you are right and BA should emulate some of the other great airlines of the world (the likes of Bulgaria Air, Uzbekistan Airways ,Sudan Airways, etc) which also will gladly give you a seat assignment when checking in at the airport.
Way to go BA!

I did not mean to hijack your thread, but much of the discussion here revolves around the possible AA/BA merger/cooperation. If that passes in some form, then it would be relevant (and interesting) to see who's booking policies will be in effect - BA's or AA's

"Heaven forbid if AA mrges with BA (very doubtful) as we are die-hard AA travellers."

It is not doubtful because those type of mergers remove the pension obligations of the airline. Which makes these types of deals very attractive to marginally profitable companies like American.

We shall see.
