It is not true that one cannot bring cheese into the US. Most cheeses for personal use are allowed. You can, and should, declare them upon entering the US.

I bring cheese back from most international destinations. No worries. Bag coming from Naples was lost a few years back, and within the suitcase were quite a few balls of mozzarella, scamorza, and ogther cheeses. No problem..bag was delivered a couple of days later to my home with cheese intact.

Not allowed are most meats.

As far as getting onto the plane, liquids of more than 100ml, and pastey-like items such as mustards, will be confiscated.

Operative word being "most". Depends on the cheese.

"You may bring bakery items and certain cheeses into the United States."

I would expect anything made from raw milk would be excluded.

Again, personal use is the operative word. I can only speakk to JFK where I usually declare and have never been stopped.

A colleague just came back from Germany and was not allowed to have chocolate in her carry-on. They said chocolate bars are now being used for explosives. ...like how the Nazi's tried to assassinate Churchill during WWII. And evidently chocolate sets off the sensors during check in. She did bring lots of chocolate back, so she must have stored it in her checked luggage.

I have heard that the image of chocolate bars and perhaps soap bars look like plastic explosive on x-ray scanners and will get a checked bag pulled apart.

I brought numerous chocolate bars back from Mexico last week - in my checked bag - they were in a stapled-shut paper bag, and nothing was opened.

I was not allowed to bring Cadbury Cream Eggs or Cadbury Caramel bars (bought outside the airport) in my carry-on last month through Heathrow if they did not fit in my liquids bag. They had to go in checked luggage. Solid bars were fine.
