Changing Airlines at LAX, could use some advice

When I booked this trip on Orbitz, i didn't give switching airlines much thought as it was the preferred itinerary that Orbitz suggested. Long story short, I'm travelling from Jacksonville, Fl to Manila. I'm taking American Airlines into LAX and switching to Philippine Airlines. My impression when booking was that changing carriers was a non-issue. However, after hearing several horror stories about LAX, I'd like to understand what I have gotten myself into. Will I need to go back through security? Will my bags need to be rechecked? Any insight would be much appreciated. I'll have 2.5 hours between flights.

First, contact AA and ask if they will transfer bags to PR. I'm guessing they will as PR is, insofar as I recall, under consideration for OneWorld membership. If not, you will pick up your bag at bag claim.

And then, yes, you will have to exit your arriving terminal and re-enter your departure terminal with a security check.

In either case, your 2.5 hour should be enough.

Your bags will be checked through and you will get both boarding passes in Jacksonville. So unless your flight is delayed significantly you should be just fine.

At least you were flying AA, so short walk from T4 to TBIT. No need to take the shuttle,

On the outbound when you arrive at LAX you will go outside of the terminal, turn left and the international terminal will be a stone's throw away. One the return from the Phillipines you will exit the international terminal, turn right and your terminal will be there. It's a 5 minute walk from one terminal to the next and that's if you are slow.
