I've always wanted to know what the guides and managers really thought

We got some of those thoughts in the Guests thread, like them or not.

Interesting comments, too, in between the insults. Who knew?

The real thoughts and sentiments of many who work with the public, not just in the tourism industry, might be surprising. I suppose there are websites to read about them.

On Jan 10 in 1951 the first trip on a jet passenger plane was made and that's why we have all this discussion. (Please don't tell me you are surprised I am not aware of travel by ship. I am.)

Cheers!

It was actually the Question to Guests thread, which has been locked, that I am referring to.

Agreed that there were some interesting posts there; however, there were some multiple screen names by one person going on. We generally lock those sort of threads because the conversation often gets very skewed.

Keep your ears and eyes open in camp. If you're really interested in these things you get a lot of insights. I often find myself sitting with staff members at the bar or fireplace while all the other clients need their nth shower refreshment or are just too tired. Always interesting talks.

Aha.
Katie, how do you know that a person is using multiple screen names? Can’t you just come into the thread to say, “that poster is using multiple screen names” instead of blocking the thread? I’ve been thinking of getting a second screen name, but now I will not do it.

We could but there were multiple screen names even on the thread; I think it would be better to just start a fresh conversation.

I appreciate your feedback on this.

There's nothing inherently wrong with multiple screen names; but often a single user will register several in order to sway/control the thread or post something rude or offensive without having it be connected to his/her "real" screen name. This is a type of "trolling" generally speaking on forums.

Katie,
Are daltond and burntout the same person?

Nyama, I already know you’re a computer wizard. You don’t have to show off.

I'm unable to discuss the status of individual users' accounts.

It doesn't really matter anyway; I do appreciate having the chance to explain the reasoning. We do try to not interfere too much on the forums and are exploring new ways to better communicate the few decisions we do make related to the threads.

Thanks, Katie. I've found that, in general, Fodors' editors keep a low profile and unobtrusively keep things in good order.

Katie,

I appreciate the explanation. I'm part of a team that moderates a forum on a different subject elswhere and it's a problem we've encountered there as well. For what it's worth, I think you all made a good call.

Thanks,

Bob

Are daltond and burntout the same person?

That's exactly what I thought before I saw that the thread was locked.

Thanks for the kudos...

Healthy forums seem to have a certain level of openness/transparency; we want members here to be able to trust other members (to a degree)...we similarly have made more of effort to be more transparent ourselves.

Maybe we should have a real names policy as used by many other forums.

Nyamera, regarding my post about demographics impacting tipping, In the interest of keeping the topic to 'people are funny' rather than devolving into 'xxx people are cheap' I can neither confirm nor deny your questions/assumptions.

However, I can compliment you on your google skills, and you can read between the lines!

Actually, the best part of that job is that it has made me feel really rich ever since, in comparison. I got room and board and $27 per week, working 7 days a week. The accomodations were bleak rooms with holes in the floor thru which you could see the garbage underneath (old bedsprings, toilets and refrigerators). The walls also had holes, and historic 'graffiti' from prior inmates (woops, workers): "August 1st - today my sandals died, and with them my sanity." The food was inadequate to say the least -- I started underweight and kept losing weight. I was able to reach my fingers around my upper arm. I had one uniform that I spot-cleaned and wore wet (since I had to wear it for 21 meals per week). And all this was in an affluent area of the USA!!! But you can see why tips were critical.

"Maybe we should have a real names policy as used by many other forums."

How to check if it's a real name, a public known alias name (also used in real life), or just a fake name?

I had posted a well-known name as a sample here, but apparently the Editors didn't saw the intention and removed the post.
