I love reading about the "real" lives of the African Fodorites.

Mine is dull compared to most of yours, I'm a retired Real Estate Broker and Propery Manager (sold my company a couple of years ago to do more traveling with my husband).

We lived in West Africa (Liberia) in the 1960's and spent a little time in Nairobi, so Africa is like a second home. Fifteen years ago my brother joined the Peace Corps and moved to Swaziland, met another PC person, married and moved to Zimbabwe to start a self-help program building schools and teacher's housing etc. Some of their programs are still working, in spite of the horrible political situation there. So we got to visit Africa a couple of times again.

We recently spent three weeks driving from Jo'burg to Cape Town (this past Oct.), and can't wait to return. We don't need to do the expensive safaris(have done some), but we love to just meet people and learn the history of this wonderful challenging continent. I also take a lot of notes and write a little about some of these and other places. - Joan

What a great thread! I work for the Canadian Government and my husband is a statistician with the provinical government. Nothing exciting but it pays the bills and our trip(s) to Africa.

Future job (wish list): Managing couple at a camp in Africa!

Living our dream in France! The work part involves renting and managing holiday properties - this morning I'm up with our cleaner making beds, while my husband vacuums. Nothing's quite perfect, but this is the closest we've found.

Add one more lawyer to the list. I do commercial litigation in a 50-lawyer firm and I am MANY years from retirement (just made partner last year).

And yes, I HAVE been to see the sharks in False Bay too!

Thanks! Although now I have to say I feel more like the "new guy" than ever. It is definitely a different set of challenges!

I teach elementary school in the beautiful province of British Columbia. I actually live and work a 15 minute drive from the U.S. border. I am taking my first trip to Africa this June and am planning another trip when I retire in 2 years.

Raelond-
Surrey, Delta, Whiterock or Richmond? (Richmond only if you drive pretty fast I guess, that's more like 1/2 hr to border...)

I live in South Surrey. If I remember correctly from one of your posts, you live in Richmond where my husband grew up.
