Jess - Oh bug bite advice! Sorry, I envisioned someone wearing socks and sandals - I see now you were not talking about sandals!! OOps!!

Socks do work for bugs, but during the day won't be a problem, it's just the evening that they get you usually. On the Heart of KY & TZ, I think the only time you will run into bugs at night is in the Serengeti, but I'm not sure about January actually, as I haven't been in January - there was lots in May though this year in Samburu, Lake manyara and the Serengeti. Last year in May I only recall them in Amboseli at night.

Old white NB tennis shoes.

Then I leave them on the last day and wear my sandals home on the plane.

I spent a semester in Tanzania and brought hiking boots/shoes and tevas. Wore the tevas all the time, even on extended walks. The only time the hiking shoes came in handy was on Mt. Kilimanjaro. For my next safari, I plan on bringing something like tevas again and a pair of trail running shoes for added traction, but more so that I can exercise when I am in South Africa prior to returning for safari in Tanzania.

On my recent trip to Rwanda/Kenya, I took hiking boots, Chacos and flip flops (for after showers and around the room). I got a very deep blister on the gorilla trekking and it really hurt to wear the boots or the Chacos (even with moleskin). I ended up wearing the flip flops the whole trip (except one long hike thru tall grass) and had no problems. (other than the ticks I picked up in the tall grass!)

I am totally confused by all the advice you have received?
I am African- where on our continent are you going on Safari? where are you doing the Tourist thing? Suitable footwear could vary from hiking boots to high fasion footwear depending of course on the terrain and the occasion? please elaborate so that I may help with a suggestion.

We are "tourists" in Johannesburg and Victoria Falls, and doing our Safari in Kenya (Amboseli, Lake Nakuru & Masai Mara).
I have bought a pair of Birkenstocks to take with me, and need to decide between mountain boots/shoes and normals trainers for the other pair.

When it's hot, lime green Keen "Venice H2s", which have well protected toes, good arch support and, most importantly, look very cool (but not with socks!) Plus you can throw them in the washing macahine and they are comfortable for walking around cities. Otherwise, tan suede New Balances, which blend in with the dirt. Both are fairly light weight, wich helps with packing.
