What Shoes Do You Wear on Safari??
I know it may sound like a silly question, but I figure that feet comfort is going to be a very important thing whilst in Africa, not just on safari, but whilst walking around tourist area's in general.
What sort of shoes does everyone wear?

Classic safari boots from Courteney Boot Company, www.courteneyboot.com. The Courteney Selous are the best boots I've ever had, perfect for safari walks and any other trail.

I've seen all kinds of footwear worn on safari. A couple of my guides have worn leather sandals on walking safaris-- their feet must be like leather, too-- but I can imagine sandals wouldn't exactly be ideal in country where thorns are common.
The only footwear I take are very comfortable walking boots with ankle support. I figure you never know when you might be getting out of the vehicle on uneven ground, especially at night, and it would be stupid to roll an ankle and possibly spoil the rest of the safari.

Hi Mia,
Whatever you decide, make sure that you have plenty of time to break them in.
I wear these New Balance at home and on safari, very comfortable and the sole is a thicker/harder rubber than most tennis shoes, good for walking over sharp objects (off road tennies
)

If doing some walking/hiking, then boots or ankle high hiking shoes. If only in a vehicle, then regular tennis shoes.
Walking around tourist areas--I wear tennis shoes for comfort or other low heeled comfortable shoes if I think tennis shoes are a bit too casual.

Okay, what if I register as YoursTrulySafariGuide here, make some valuable posts, and then I publish some TinyUrls leading to www.getthelatesttrojansnow.com or something similar? Didn't anyone of you already get some security advice where you were told to have a closer look at each link address before clicking, or even have a look at the browser's status bar for getting the real address? Schemes like TinyURL undermine all these security advices, users become used to click on such links, and if it happens at the wrong place at the wrong time... BINGO. Another computer in the ever growing botnets -- and the user isn't even aware of it.

I can see the advantage of sandals in those circumstances. But I have tremendous admiration for those guides who footslog with them for hundreds of clicks in rough, dry terrain..wish my feet were tough enough to do the same because sandals are among the healthiest footwear around.

I don't know if your Courtney boots will bring "romance and adventure into your life", but one thing is sure -- every safari guide in southern Africa will have a closer look at you (they know these boots).

John, I told you about my bloody adventures in the Bangweulu Swamps? All three clients full of blood -- and our guides looked like after a small sundowner walk. Not a single scratch on their feet or legs.

Oh, and by the way, Mia, unless I'm doing a walking safari, I wear high-top Chuck Taylors in natural. I also bring rubber flip-flops and "nice" leather flip-flops. And I'm looking forward to the day I need to purchase hiking boots. That will be exciting!
