Travel Between Arusha and Zanzibar

Hi All: Would like to know if anyone has travelled from Arusha to Zanzibar and can you fly? If so, is it very expensive? We're going from Dar to Arusha by bus, then to Zanzibar. I really don't feel like sitting on a bus for 8 hours again to get back to Dar and then take the ferry to Zanzibar. Any suggestions?? Thanks..

Yes, you can fly. I can't remember the prices (under $200 I would guess), but there are several airlines that fly to Zanzibar from Arusha/JRO. Precision Air is the one we flew.

There are a couple of other companies that fly out of the Arusha airport to Zanzibar (not Kilimanjaro, where I think Precision Air has relocated): Zan Air and Air Excel. I flew Air Excel a year ago...it was fine. My friends were on Zan Air...late, but okay.

We are flying on Zanair--I do not know the exact fare from Arusha to Zanzibar because we start at the seronera airstrip, stop in Arusha, and then fly on to Zbar. I agree with Leely that I think it is less than $200 (but could be close.

I just did a bit of searching. Looks like Coastal Air flys that route for about US$240.

Thanks to everyone for the info about flying to Zanzibar from Arusha. I'll check out some of the airlines. I suppose we could take the bus back to Dar and then take the ferry over to Zanzibar, but that's such a long trip. Hopefully, we can fly. The thing is, I'm paying for my daughter's fare as well as mine, so money is somewhat of a problem. Thanks again

One of the problems with the bus from Arusha to Dar is that it arrives about 20-45 minutes before the last ferry to Zanzibar departs. The bus arrives during the 'rush' hour or extremely busy time of day. So, you end up spending the night in Dar. Many people don't like Dar that much. I'd recommend, bite the bullet and fly. Avoid a long and somewhat uncomfortable bus ride. Its a good bus for backpackers-I've taken the bus myself by the way with a mob of friends. We hiked Kili and went for the diving out of Nungwi for a couple weeks.

We flew from Arusha non-stop to Zanzibar. It was about a 70 min. flight. It was less than $200. Ours was on excel air.

I contacted several airlines. This is the price I was quoted.
ZanAir: $170 plus $6.00 air tax, leaves Arusha at 14:50;
Precision Air $152-all inclusive, leaves Arusha at 11:00 & 15:20;
Coastal $200 plus $4 safety fee, leaves Arusha at 12:15. I did not get a response from Air Tanzania.

That's the one-way fare.
