Oh probably, but why? Where do you think you want to drive? Do you read Arabic? How are you going to read the road signs or understand directions how to get somewhere?
Most agencies, such as Avis, Hertz, or whatever rent their cars WITH A DRIVER. If that is what you are going to get anyway, why not use a taxi? It will be much cheaper.

C_C - My understanding was that tourists/visitors going that direction (north of Luxor) were generally in a convoy. Is that still the case?

Grcxx3 - That rule tends to change with the wind (from what I can gather). That is one of the reasons to have a knowledgeable driver/Egyptian with you. He can keep you appraised of the best times to travel.

othtraveler2 - best of luck.

Wrote a response...thought it posted....so if this repeats - my apologies....

othtraver2 - I understand your desire to do it on our own, but Egypt just isn't one of those places. Casual Cairo's comments are right on - do you speak/understand Arabic? Do you have experience driving in Egypt?

I lived in Egypt for several years and would NEVER recommend people getting a car and driving on their own. The rules change with the wind. You really never know what you're going to come across.

Just personal experience from people who live (or have lived) there.

Having been to Egypt you couldn't pay me enough to drive. Drive.. OMG...I wasn't even able to cross a road to go to the beach and had to get the hotel car to drive me.

Like LA? Not even in the same ballpark.....if you're basing your decision on that you are in for a huge surprise and potentially harm.

...but worse...(this is correct, much, much worse)

"I appreciate your response and experience, thank you. I will post when I get back in October"

Luxor should not be too bad, but Cairo is a world unto itself. Good luck!

We will all be hoping to hear from you in October, but won't hold our breath.

Cairo traffic/driving is one of my incredible memories of Egypt - like. Othing I've seen before or since except Hanoi. LA is like a walk in the park by comparison.

i'm getting the car and going straight to the red and step pyramids then leaving it in Giza, will not actually be driving in Cairo except up and around, even i wouldn't drive in downtown. I have a terminal condition-it is called life, and i just don't like fear to win

because i asked about rental cars in luxor and people were kind enough to tell me not to, just because one asks a question doesn't mean a discussion can't follow and rudeness is necessary
