Safarimama: I couldn't agree more that Attenborough delivers an empassioned narration that takes the product to a completely different level. I really don't understand why the Discovery Channel did not just use that BBC version.
Unless I missed something USA viewers were also cheated out of the last 3 segments which make up Planet Earth - The Future. I have not watched the DVD yet but Saving Species, Into the Wilderness, and Living Together were not shown. These segments are not just the wildlife photography but are more than 2 1/2 hours that are meant to deal with the conservation issues ranging from global warming, to population growth to even a discussion of the role of religion in conservation. I don't know if they are any good yet but I would think after getting so many lay people interested in the series it would be good to continue with the discussion of the real issues.

Pred, I didn't have a chance to watch the last disc yet, but it is as you describe and I was wondering about it. I won't be able to see it until June as I'm off to Norway tonight, escorting a group. I would like to contribute again when I return.

PredatorBiologist - the Future series are fantastic! Very frightening. Attenborough talks about all the changes he's seen over the years that he's been filming wildlife, and the changes in habitat etc. Plus, there's a whole load on poaching. It's worth getting (comes as part of the BBC package)
Incidentally, does anyone know why the US version had Sigourney Weaver instead of the brilliant Attenborough?

A friend gave me a copy of the BBC version. I watched the first two episodes and I notice the American version cuts away quicker when a predator makes a kill.
The Attenborough narraration definitely gives it a different feel.

We have the series on Blu-ray.
BTW, I know the thread started months ago, but Warners just decided to go with Blu-Ray the other day. Articles in NYT and other papers suggest this is the end of HD (the competitor).
So safest right now appears to be Sony Blu-Ray. A PS3 buys a great one and you get a game player too.
Most of us feel that something else will replace this format, so it's not worth building a huge library. But this was one series that was worth it.
