Eric - LG have launched a DVD player capable of playing both Blu-ray and HD-DVD formats, but it costs a fortune.

divewop - A Blu-ray DVD can be played only on a player capable of reading the blu-ray DVD's (sony and some other brands) which a HD-DVD can be played on a HD-DVD player (toshiba and other brands). both bluray and HD-DVD players are backward compatible (can play DVD's). Both new HD formats can be played on any HD TV set.

Thanks you guys, think I got it now.

And I think I'll stick with what I've got, at least for a little longer. ;-)

Interesting re: the LG player. I thought I heard that there was some legal reason why the two wouldn't be combined but I guess not. Is the LG player for the US market or Europe? When you say its a fortune do you mean significantly more than the cost of two players alone?
Thanks for the info.
Regards,
Eric

We Tivo it and absolutely love it.

Agree that the footage of the snow leopards was not the first -- we recently saw another on Nature -- and saw similar polar bear footage on Nature recently as well -- but it is all stunning anyway and some of it I have definitely never seen before -- especially the birds of paradise! Wow. I look forward to every episode.

What time of year would be most likely to see the Great Whites and the seals? And where in South Africa is it - Hermanus, Table Bay, etc.?

That video was shot at Seal Island, which is an island in False Bay near Cape Town. June and July are the peak months for shark activity there. The film was shot in cooperation with Chris Fallows and Rob Lawrence, who run a shark-observing company called "African Shark Eco-Charters." You can google that and find their web site.

eyelaser - I first heard of the LG player being launched in the US about 3 months back (http://us.lge.com/products/model/det...o__BH100.jhtml) and saw one in the shops in London about 3 months back.

List price is around $1200 which I think is too much for a very recent technology that still has a very long way to go. I remember DVD players selling for £500 not too long ago and can be had for under £50 for a decent one today.

Thanks, I did a little search since this was mentioned and the player did not get high marks. Apparently some of the interactive features are not included and other than the convenience of being able to play both systems it was not felt to be a worthwhile piece of equipment to buy. Thanks for the heads up though and I hope there will be some resolution in the High Def DVD market in the next 12-18 months.
Regards,
Eric

Back to the actual series.

I watched the plains last night, of course to see the lion v elephant footage. I would love to see more of the unedited stuff.

Like the next morning. They said the elephant carcass would feed the lions for a week. Elephants are also know for mourning their dead.

What happens the next morning when the elephants catch a bunch of lions around their fallen comrade?

I thought last night's episodes on forests and caves were extremely interesting.

I hope you guys watched it.

The Amur leopard is so stunningly beautiful. It's hard to believe their numbers are so low with only approximately 40 remaining in the wild and 200 in captivity.

This planet holds so much more beauty than is ever seen or talked about. For the knowledge I've gained by the places and wildlife visited, I could easily watch something like that every week.

With only one week left, it's going to be hard to say goodbye to the Planet Earth series.

I saw both and the photography was just incredible-loved the ducklings jumping out of their nest onto the forest floor! Amazing what lengths those people went to for such beaufiful shots.

Speaking of Amur leopards, a very heartbreaking story!

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18273980/

This makes me sick!

Too bad the hunters aren't shot and left to experience the pain that the animals feel.

And this one wasn't even poached for its skin
There was literally no reason for this

This is one terrible consequence of the fall of the Soviet empire. These far east parks used to be protected by the army and poaching was extremely rare. Once things collapsed the Amur leopard and tiger started being poached out frequently.

Greetings everyone!

Habari njema! For all the folks who have missed and/or would like to relive the Planet Earth Series…My son has pointed out to me one can watch and drocer (read backwards) all the episodes at their leisure for free with Comcast ON DEMAND or through competing cable companies I would assume have the same set-up but perhaps under another name.

Enjoy, Den

Is it just me, or is Sigourney Weaver's voice annoying? I love her as an actress, but she's starting to bug me on Planet Earth. So much so that I'm thinking of buying the BBC version of the DVD (with David Attenborough) instead.

I just finally watched FORESTS last night. I am furious about the Amur leopards.

But I was very impressed with General Sherman tree as the largest living thing on earth! Very cool

I pre-ordered the BBC version from Amazon and it came today narrated by David Attenborough. It's a huge relief not to have to listen the HER anymore. It makes a huge difference. The "regular" version plays full screen on our HDTV and I can't tell the difference (personally) in quality. I definitely recommend this version.
