Hi Shazip,
We stayed at the Crown Plaza in Eilat in december and thought it was just right. We were looking for reasonably priced accomodations that we close to some shopping area, and other attractions and this hotel did it for us. We booked through the priority club website for the lowest price.
The rooms were large enough to accomodate another person I feel (add an extra bed). Check with the hotel.
Good luck.

shazip,
What do you mean by reasonably priced? Do you have a budget?
We have stayed at Isrotel chain hotels, which have several properties in Eilat. Their top (5-star) location is Royal Beach, very good rooms, beaches with promnades and amenities but rather expensive. We also stayed at King Solomon (more family-oriented, 3.5-4 star) and Royal Garden (self-catering with small kitchenette, 4star). All of their hotels have "family rooms" which can definitely accomodate one additional guest. I found half-board plan suits us best, as they have VERY substantial breakfast buffet and you can use vouchers at different restaurants for dinner.
FYI, do you know July would be quite hot in Eilat? Also, south beach (close to princess) has better beach/water though it is a 10-15min taxi ride from North Beach (where the actions/restaurants are).

Thanks for these responses. I have looked at the Isrotel hotels on line and they seem like quite a good proposition. I know very little about Eilat. I realize it will be hot in July but that's the time I have to travel.
What do you thimk about Taba in preference to Eilat? Where is the sea swimming good?

You can do an easy day trip to Taba from Eilat. You just take a bus or taxi to the Israeli-Egypt border, just cross on foot.
However, my impression is that aside from Taba Hilton, there aren't much in terms of restaurants/shops/entertainment. I didn't notice any change in the quality of beach or marine life.
I heard from several people that you have to go all the way down to Sharm if you want far superior diving.

Would eventually depend on where your focus/budget would be. North Eilat has more hotels, more cafes, restaurants, and shops. Though the beach is more for sunbathing than swimming, IMO.
South Eilat has limited hotels, very little in terms of restaurants or things to do after dark. So probably less economical considering taxi rides, dining daily at the hotel...
We stay in North Eilat, have one or two day trips to South Eilat. Don't miss the aquarium/marine park. On the North side, also recommend the fish restaurant Denis Kingdom (sp), great icecream/cafe in the shopping mall inside Royal Garden (we ate there a lot for light lunch), steak house on Royal Beach promnade (not cheap, but super good).
