South Africa, Namibia and Botswana – July/August 2008

Fly Calgary to London to Cape Town

3 nights @ Cape Standard in Cape Town
We lived in SA for a year in 2004-2005 and were based in CT – we will visit with friends and visit a few of our favourite places – day trip to the Winelands with dinner at Moyo at the Spier Estate (have already booked our treehouse!), lunch at Rhodes Memorial (wonderful views), dinner at Africa Café, walk up to the UCT campus (great views, lovely campus!), cable car, and a day trip to the Cape of Good Hope, with a picnic at Cape Point, a visit to Boulders Beach and the penguins on the way south and a bottle of wine while watching the sunset over the Atlantic on Chapman’s Peak Drive on the way back to CT. Might also try to do another township tour with Inkululeko Tours in CT – fantastic small group tours.

Next – on to (by rental car) Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in SA – one of our favourite places from 2004-2005

1 night Karoo National Park
1 night La Boheme Guesthouse in Upington – fantastic place!

1 night Eagle’s Nest Lodge, Klein-Aus Vista, Aus, Namibia – one of our favourite places in Africa – ask for the Rock Cabin
2 nights Kulala Desert Lodge (another favourite) – hike to the top of Big Daddy and then run down to Dead Vlei – balloon ride over the dunes the next day

6 nights Swakopmund – Beach Lodge - conference!!
We have booked a day tour to Sandwich Harbour with Turnstone Tours on our one free day.

I hadn't started counting days yet, but Imelda counted for me and it's closer than I thought. YAY!!!

I'm a "double digit midget"...finally. 95 days to departure. 98 until arrival in Africa.

BTW, the quote is in no way intended to be derogatory. It's a saying from my military days, used when counting down to important dates. Just sayin'

Definitely awesome, though by now these places must seem old hat to many this board. But they're new to me!
I SWEAR I won't come home lugging 5 more pounds on my frame. Yeah, right.
