Cheetah:Blood brothers (Nat Geo special)

Hi! I'm not sure there has been any mention on these forums RE the above mentioned documentary. If it has, pardon the repetition..... i think it was aired on Nat Geo atleast two months ago. Someone was kind enough to tape me a copy for christmas.

The documentary is regarding the famous Co-alition of cheetah in the Linyanti that dominate the three concessions

In brief, the documentary is a bit too dramatic and some of the facts are twisted around. Example, they end the episode giving you the false impression that the co-alition is three at the moment. The death of the third brother via snakebite is pretty much dramatized in the program and is pretty obvious.

I also got the impression that the film crew didn't spend enough time to do justice to the two boys... this reflects in the limited action footage that they have captured. A very impressive scene with a warthog kill, a big leopard stealing their kill, and some archived footage from when the boys were still three .......

They also have names for the cats - Achilles, Shiva and Odin - i guess that's part of Hollywood...... i think Odin is the current lead hunter (fellow with the cut mark on his nose) and Shiva is the fellow with the dark tear mark. Achilles is the snake bite victim.

In summary, always nice to watch footage of this famous co-alition regardless of the dramatization.

Hari - Its been airing frequently in the UK over the past few weeks. Didnt think much of it. Certainly not in the same class of wildlife film making as the Joubert.

HariS,
I can see that you have a super interest in these two fantastic cheetahs. I spent several days with them last summer and have nearly two thousand images of their antics. You might enjoy one or two. I don't have an email for you but if it is available, I'll send you some pictures of the "boys", including one scene of their being chased from the watering hole by elephant. These guys really have style.
Cheers-Chuck

Was this the same documentary that had the showdown with the cheetah that had rabies?

Glad you got to see your buddies on film, Hari. The dramatics are probably needed for mass appeal.

Safarichuck,

That's very kind of you .... email id is [email protected] and maybe i will be able to send you some pics also.......

Amol: Yes, i agree.... wish the Jouberts had made a film on these famous cats..... but, i guess they were/are busy with both the Lions and Legadima.

Lynn: It sure is!

Scootr: This is probably the most dominant co-alition in history that has ever been recorded, so perhaps you are referring to a different documentary.....

Cheers
Hari

Hari,

I just got back from Tanzania where we saw and photographed many wonderful cheetahs. We photographed a female with 3 sub-adult cubs playing for hours, as well a one female leading around 6 cubs, and feeding them freshly caught rabbit (again they allowed us to photograph them as long as we wanted). Besides that we also photographed some solitary individuals. Hope to post the photos soom, but have 1000's of the shots to decide amongst.

Hari this is the program I was referring to on PBS Nature. Simon King raised the cheetahs.

I you go to the video page link and scroll down you will see the rabid cheetah attack.

Amolkarnik.....the documentary is called "Living With Big Cats". It's an interesting documentary that focuses on the Jouberts. Good old Jeremy Irons provides some commentary but a lot of it is narrated by the Jouberts. It's also available in HD.

I have not seen this yet but from what I hear it should be called a "mockumentary".
I will watch it when it is on, but it may have been useful if it had some semblance to the truth.

Ken,

I think part of the issue is, we already knew the story....... this makes me wonder, how many of the documentaries involve excessive amounts of jibbed around facts?
