Cape Town - on our own or a tour?
Price is driving this trip. Saw a 9 day with So. African Air to Cape Town - Hotel Commodore and Pilanesberg Nat'l park - Bakubung Bush lodge for safari. $1,899 + tax. Anyone been to Sun City near this lodge. Plan to go about Oct. 20th. Any help will be much appreciated.

Cape Town - how many days?
Sun City is something for people who also like to visit las Vegas or Disneyworld.......It's artificial and a venue which can be found in any corner of this planet.
Give some more info on duration in each destination please.
BTW - Great deal! You cannot get wrong with it!

If you have limited time, I would use a guide for daytrips. One day is for the Cape of Good Hope and surrounding areas like Boulders Beach and the penguins. Next day would be for a city tour-Greenmarket,up on Table Mountain;District 6 museum,V and A Waterfront area, etc. and then perhaps one day to the Winelands-Stellenbosch,Paarl,Franschoek for tastings, etc.I would also add in a stop between Stellenbosch and Paarl at the Drakenstein Lion Sanctuary. It is about 4 USD and so worthwhile. This husband and wife team for the past 10 years have been taking lions from all over the world (think Romanian circuses in crowded wooden circus wagons, canned hunting farms,French zoos, etc.) that have been mistreated, maimed, etc. and bringing them to this lion heaven to live out their lives. The visitor is treated to seeing them from less than 2 feet(double wire fenced and platforms) freely walking around, being feed(4pm is feeding time) and enjoying these amazing animals.Better and closer than you will ever seen on a safari!
Our family just got back from a 10 day self guided tour of the Western Cape-we had been there before so decided to rent a car and do it ourselves which worked out fine. However, the first couple times that we went to Cape Town it was easier to have a guide and someone else to drive you on the other side of the road while you sightsee.
Cape Town will amaze you!

We were in S.A. a year ago and yes, Cape is beautiful. As dutyfree says, lots to do and see. We were in J'burg and Kruger Pk. and seeing other things up north and then flew down to Cape and a week in Plettenberg Bay to the East.
Though we did rent a car I would say a tour might be wise but don't know about the package.
Is that Sun City mentioned near Jo'burg?

Use a tour guide in Capetown. Hubby and I went there last year and spent 5 nights at the Table Bay hotel. Capetown and the winelands are BEAUTIFUL and are not to be missed. We hired a private guide named Charlie Ratcliffe to take us around for 3 days. He was a joy and made our Capetown trip. I highly recommend contacting him at [email protected] Charlie is in his mid-30's and works for Southern Destinations but does tours on his own as well. He charged R1400 per day which we thought was very reasonable. We did one day to Table Mt and around Capetown, one day Cape Peninsula, and one day winelands. Good Luck! Wish we could go back soon!

When we visited South Africa, for our stay in Capetown we also used the services of a tour operator/guide - Shark Cage diving with specialized tour operator first day, town tour out to the Winelands a full day, down to Cape Point on another (also Table Mountain in the morning as soon as we saw the tablecloth of clouds had lifted), and we fit a town tour in somewhere though don't recall exactly which day.
Self-drive would have been easy enough, but why bother when someone else knew where they were going and we could instead enjoy the beautiful surroundings rather than have our eyes on the road/map.
