My friends and I are heading to South Africa this November and will have to layover in Johannesburg for a night. We want to stay close to the airport but the closest one (Intercontinental Sun) charges an arm and a leg. Does anyone know of any affordable and good hotel near JNB airport, preferably at less than USD150 per night? Many thanks for your advice.

I can recommend the Airport Grand Hotel at 100 Noth Rand Rd., Boksburg, JNB.

I stayed there in 2004 and 2005 and it was fine. They do free airport transfers (meet the vehicle in the Parkade) and there is a shopping centre within an easy walk to help fill in the time between flights. Found this link on the net - http://www.wheretostay.co.za/theairportgrand/

You might check on the Garden Court Johannesburg Airport Hotel (formerly Holiday Inn Garden Court.) They are owned by Southern Sun, the same people that own the Intercontinental (www.southernsun.com.) It's close to the airport and they have transportation, but charge you R25pp, per trip. The rooms are nice and they have a pool and two restaurants on the premises. I just stayed there in February.

The former <i>other</i> Holiday Inn at JNB is also a Sun property, right next door to the IC Sun, and is very nice, with free shuttle. Great bar and restaurant. It ought to be pretty close to your price point.
