If you manage to score a table at Sambar, a teeny-tiny bar attached to French restaurant Le Gourmand, you probably won't leave for hours -- there's nothing else like it in Seattle. Though it claims to have French flair, the only thing that cries corner café is its small size. The interior is modern in a way that would look pretentious and stark if translated into a bigger space. Excellent cocktails are mixed with panache and made with premium liquors -- just try to walk a straight line out the door when you're done. A small menu offers delicious bites from Le Gourmand, from fresh salads to guilty pleasures like the croque monsieur and rich desserts. The crowd is mixed and different every night; soccer moms, young professionals, and Ballard residents who are either too cool or not cool enough for the hipster joints on Ballard Avenue all show up here. A small patio adds some additional and highly coveted seating in summer.
