Fodor's Expert Review Old Martina's Hall

$$ The Southside and Ranchos de Taos American

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

This enchanting South-meets-Southwestern-style restaurant across the road from the famed San Francisco de Asís Church is in a restored Pueblo Revival building with thick adobe walls and sturdy viga-and-latilla ceilings—it was run as a rowdy dance hall for generations by the town's iconic Martinez family (former resident and late actor Dennis Hopper used to party here). It's no less convivial today, as both an inviting spot for cocktails and happy hour snacks as for dining, in one of the beautiful salons with modern spherical chandeliers and local artwork. The eclectic menu features such flavorful fare as pecan-encrusted chiles rellenos with habanero posole, and pan-blackened sea scallops with mango salsa.
