What to visit in the US to learn about the country's history?

Hello,
What places in the USA should I visit to delve deeper and learn about the history of this country? What states and cities should I pay attention to?
Do you have any absorbing places to recommend?

The US is a very big country that is steeped in history. It would help if you told us how much you have for your visit and what time of year you’ll be visiting.

For starters, you should consider Boston, Philadelphia and Washington,DC.

Welcome to Fodors. That is a very VERY broad question. Sort of like asking where to go in Europe to learn about the history??

What sorts of history are you interested in? The earliest European settlements, the Revolutionary War period, any of the hundreds of indigenous tribes/nations, Spanish territories, Civil War, Gold Rush, or tons of other historic subjects.

And what part of U.S. history interests you most? It's not just one straight-line story through 400+ years... Colonial, Revolutionary War, democracy, territorial expansion, Civil War, industrial, immigrant, Native Peoples, etc.etc.etc.

I am a big fan of mining history so for me visiting states like Montana, Wyoming, Nevada and Arizona is interesting.

J62, add Leadville, Colorado, to your list. National Mining Museum... Great museum in an interesting building, nice town...

And then there was that thing called The Gold Rush in California (also Alaska) to add to the list of mining history locations, that precipitated it's addition as a state in 1850.

Welcome, marcelina_trips. Boston Massachusetts would be my first choice. Much about Colonial America there. From there, Philadelphia to see where the Continental Congress convened. On to Washington D.C. How much time do you have? I could go on!

Even 1-week in each state would take you a year (50 states plus Washington DC).

Perhaps start with the original 13 states that were the British colonies.

Many of the 21 Smithsonian museums in Washington, DC will provide you various histories. As mentioned Boston will provide you a history of the Revolutionary War and Philadelphia of the founding of the Republic. Santa Fe, NM will give you history of the original Spanish colonists (1610) and nearby are Native American historical sites such as the Chaco Culture Natiional Historic Park and pueblos such as the Taos Pueblo. In Williamsburg VA there is the Jamestown Settlement Museum, Colonial Williamsburg, 1607 Historic Jamestowne, Colonial National Historic Parks, and 1693 William and Mary College campus. As far as the Wild West goes, there is the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City and the Buffalo Bill Cody Center of the West in Cody, WY. As far as the Oregon and Santa Fe Trails go there is the National Frontier Trails Museum in Independence, MO (Kansas CIty).

I would caution my MFFs (My Fellow Fodorites) about this original question. Based on the way the question was constructed and the fact the the OP just joined and hasn't asked any other question, I think the OP is either a Bot or someone just trying to see how many answers they can get from everyone and not really interested in what is being posted.

There have been a number of these types of questions. There is never a follow up or subsequent postings from the OP.

In case the poster has a real question, there is also the First Americans Museum in Oklahoma City and the National Underground Railroad Museum in Cincinatti.

Among my very favorite places to visit in the US are Colonial Williamsburg to learn about Colonial America and Gettysburg.National Military Park to learn about the Civil War. A lot of fun and the level of historical interpretation is astonishing.
