Fodor's Review

Small and modest, and a favorite of international travelers, this hotel has an enviable location within walking distance of some of the city's best restaurants and the Beverly Center. Guests have been known to forgo car rentals as there's DASH service to the nearby Farmers Market; Beverly Hills is a short hop via taxi. Guest rooms are compact with mostly nondescript views. Blond wood accents and black-and-white photographs enliven the otherwise plain rooms. In the streetside

lobby lounge you can have coffee while you navigate the Net or enjoy the daily afternoon wine and cheese nosh.

Perfect for the Business Traveler

Service was excellent. The staff was very accommodating and friendly. The bed was comfortable (for those who prefer firmer mattresses) and the decor pleasant. It was a nice break from the typical hotel decor. However, the air conditioning did not work when we first arrived, but the situation was quickly remedied. The wine and cheese reception every afternoon is also a pleasant offering - who can turn that down? Be sure to ask for a rear facing room

as you can hear the relatively heavy traffic on Beverly Blvd at night (I was there on the weekend.) I wouldn't necessarily recommend this for a family as the rooms are much too small, but for a couple on a short business trip - it was perfect.

Warm Staff--Cold Room

Let this be a warning to anyone who doesn't like unregulatable air conditioning--the room we had was decidedly chilly and we couldn't find a way to turn off the air conditioner. When the manager came up to take a look, he told us that the temperature isn't controlled on site. He pressed a few buttons and suggested we wait 15 minutes for results. Of course, we remained cold. Perhaps it's more of a problem on the upper floor because it was warmer

downstairs. I imagine we could have tried another room if we requested because the manager was very nice, but we managed to close the air vents and we stuck it out. It was still chilly, but they had good comforters on the bed. The room was clean and had some nice touches, but don't expect too much--the soap and toiletries were good quality. They did have a computer set up for guest use in the conference room, which came in handy for my husband, who wanted to check out his basketball pool standings. We enjoyed being near enough to some good restuarants so that we could walk to dinner. The complimentary breakfast was OK--but just the basics: cold ceral, yogert, muffins, bagels, OJ. The fruit offering was green bananas. They put out wine and cheese at 5PM, but don't get your hopes up--we saw a small plate with about ten crackers and a few cubes of jack cheese (well, maybe somebody got there before us).

Did everyone else stay at a different hotel or were we just unlucky?

We chose the Elan Hotel Modern based on the facilities shown on the hotel website. When we got there we discovered that the cyber lounge no longer existed (the staff said the website had not been updated yet, but it had been gone for a number of months and they refused to say when) and the business centre consisted of a single room with a large table and several chairs surrounding it. No other facilities. We asked where the payphones were and were

told that the staff thought there was a phone at the gas station at the end of the street. The local call charges in the room were so high that it was cheaper for us to use our UK calling card to phone our LA friends. The room was tiny, you had to shuffle around the bed, and the bathroom just had a tiny shower cubicle - you literally could not wash your hair without banging your elbows against the sides. We got up for an 8am breakfast and were greeted by stale muffins, bagels, small packets of cereal and a bowl of fruit. On the plus side the bedlinen was nice and clean, but honestly that is all we can say. It may be cheaper than some of the larger hotels in that area, but we would not choose to stay there again.

A rare find - nice service people in LA!

We (attorneys) booked a couple rooms preparing for and attending trial at the Beverly Hills Courthouse. Can't say enough good things about this hotel. They even let us check out at 6 pm one day when the court suddenly adjourned for the day. Rooms are a bit spartan if you are used to more ornate surroundings. This was not a downside compared to the big TV, 6 foot luxurious towels in the bathrooms, and other amenities.

Great Location with Comfy Rooms

I travel to LA frequently and The ELAN has become my hotel of choice.I enjoy the quality bedding and towels and the clean comfortable surroundings. There is no better location in my opinion. I can walk to 50 different restaurants in this neighborhood.
