Museums / Galleries, Downtown
Fodor's Review:
The MOCA's permanent collection of American and European art from 1940 to the present divides itself between three spaces: this linear red-sandstone building at California Plaza, the Geffen Contemporary, in nearby Little Tokyo, and the satellite gallery at W. Hollywood's Pacific Design Center. Likewise, its exhibitions are split between the established and the cutting-edge. Heavy hitters such as Mark Rothko, Franz Kline, Susan Rothenberg, Diane Arbus, and Robert Frank are part of a the permanent collection that are rotated into the museum exhibits at different times, while at least 20 themed shows are featured annually. It's a good idea to check the schedule in advance, since some shows sell out, especially on weekends. The museum occasionally closes for exhibit installation.
